Chapter 423 He’s Gone
“Benjamin, I’m here to see Nina,” Erik said as he arrived.
Benjamin gave a noncommittal grunt in reply.
Erik was pretty intimidated by Benjamin. After greeting him, he went straight to find Nina.
Nina let out a little “Wow!” when she saw him. “You good!”
When Nina met Erik for the first time, her impression of him was that he wasn’t good-looking.
Back then, Erik had been heartbroken and let himself go.
So Nina, with her love for pretty things, had just stated the obvious.
Now, with his friends around, Erik was doing much better.
He wasn’t bad-looking to begin with, and with his improved mood, his whole appearance had brightened up.
So, when Nina saw him, she walked right over and hugged his leg.
She looked up at him with her bright eyes and gave him a compliment.
Erik was thrilled. He immediately picked her
He tried to lift her high in the air to play, but he couldn’t quite manage it.
“Ahem,” Erik coughed awkwardly after his failed attempt at lifting her.
He quickly changed the subject.
“Nina, did you miss me?” he asked. “I missed you so, so much.”
After his question, Nina gave him a sweet smile, and the sweet talk just flowed.
“Yeah!” she chirped. “Nina wuv you so, so muh!”
Erik was over the moon.
“Really? You really love me that much?” he asked, practically floating.
Nina was a real pro when it came to sweet-talking people.
Daniel came over too and gave Nina’s chubby cheek a kiss.

Daniel and Erik played with Nina.
Daniel specifically asked her, “Nina, I just left. Why are you already looking for me?”
Daniel, full of himself, thought the “uncle” Nina wanted was him.
But to his surprise, Nina pointed outside.
“Out?” she asked. “Want uncle! Pwetty uncle!”
Nina made it clear she was looking for the pretty uncle.
Daniel’s face fell instantly. He knew exactly who she meant.
Once he figured it out, his expression soured.
Erik, a little slower on the uptake, still hadn’t caught on.
He pressed on, asking, “Nina, what pretty uncle? Which uncle do you want? Daniel and I are right here. Aren’t you looking for us?”
Erik was setting himself up for disappointment.
Because the next second, Nina shook her head hard.
She pointed outside, her little voice firm.
“Pwetty uncle!” she insisted. “Play!”
Nina was determined to find Lester. She hadn’t finished playing with him yesterday.
Daniel watched her chubby little body leaning toward the door, completely helpless.
“Nina, we can’t find that pretty uncle,” Daniel said, trying to nip this in the bud. “He’s gone.”
To stop any chance of Nina and Lester meeting again, Daniel made something up on the spot. “That uncle went to a place very, very far away.”
Daniel’s story made Nina think of Noah’s grandpa.
“Pwetty uncle die?” Nina asked.
The last time she was in the countryside, she had learned about death.
So, when Daniel said “a place very far away” and that he wouldn’t come back, Nina understood it meant he died.
Daniel gave a vague answer. “Yeah, that’s right. He’s dead.”
Daniel figured since these two would never see each other again anyway, he could just say Lester was dead. Nina would never know the truth.
Daniel’s story about Lester being dead made Nina sad.
Her little mouth turned down, full of hurt and confusion.
“Why die!” she protested. “No die!”
Nina wasn’t giving up. She wanted Lester to come back to life.
But Daniel wouldn’t change his story.
Seeing that Lester seemed really dead, Nina’s eyes welled up with tears.
