Chapter 456 Father and Son
Lester was also anxious to see the results.
When William heard he wanted the test, he took a deep breath and called for a doctor to take the samples.
The results wouldn’t be available immediately.
While waiting, William decided not to announce anything about the paternity test just yet.
He wanted to be sure. Talking before seeing the proof was pointless. He would wait for the results.
Waiting was agony for William. Nina, of course, was completely oblivious to the adults’ complicated emotions. All she knew was playing.
She dragged Nelson around the hospital. Whenever they saw a doctor in a white coat, they ran away. But when they saw other kids, she ran to them to play.
Two of the kids she played with had serious illnesses and came from families who couldn’t afford the treatment for much longer.
After meeting Nina, they received help.
Catherine ran an international children’s serious illness donation foundation, and these two kids qualified for aid. They got the foundation’s support.
Nina was doing good deeds all over the hospital. But she was such a live wire that after a while, Amelia let Daniel take over.
Daniel had the stamina and energy to keep up with her the whole time.
But even he was getting worn out.
“Nina, we can’t go over there. That’s where the contagious patients are.
“This vending machine needs coins. Just telling it to open won’t work.
“The doctors didn’t give you a shot today. You can’t tell them to have the police arrest them. That’s not polite, okay?
“And wait, we can’t go play outside. Your mom and grandpa are still at the hospital.”
Daniel figured Amelia was still at the hospital because she was tired from looking after Nina and needed to rest. That made sense.
But why is Dad still here? If he came to see Nina, he’s already seen her. So why isn’t he leaving? It’s strange.
Daniel knew William was a busy man. For him to just hang around a hospital didn’t make any sense.
Daniel couldn’t figure out his dad’s motive, so he asked Nina.
“Nina, didn’t your grandpa come to see you? Why isn’t he leaving yet?”
He asked several times, but Nina, busy picking up trash from the floor, wasn’t listening.
She’d found a piece of discarded chocolate. The wrapper was torn, and it was clearly dirty and stepped on. She peeled the wrapper open. Without a second’s hesitation, she went to put it in her mouth.
“Grandpa see Lester,” she sniffled. “Blood owie. Doc bad.”
In Nina’s world, doctors were never good. She didn’t like seeing them.
Even though adults always said doctors were good. Nina was still too young. She didn’t have a positive impression of them.
Daniel didn’t try to make her think better of doctors this time. He just kept wondering why William was visiting Lester.
Before Daniel could figure it out, the expedited paternity test results came back.
William held the results, almost afraid to look at them. He took a deep breath, bracing himself for a moment before opening the report.
He’d seen a report like this before, for Benjamin and Nina. It had said they were father and daughter.
This time, the report said William and Lester were father and son.
It was just a few lines of text, but William read them over and over.
Words failed him. His heart was pounding, like it was about to burst with everything he didn’t know how to say.
Standing in the hallway, William couldn’t see anything else—not the doctors, not the passing patients.
He just stared fixedly at the report in his hand.
