That was just how Nina was. Scared or not, nothing could stop her from wanting to go out and play.
Benjamin didn’t usually stop Nina from going out. But these past few days, he really wanted her to stay home and settle down.
If she could just be good for two days, it would let the adults calm their nerves after the scare.
With that in mind, Benjamin decided to discuss it with her.
“Can we skip visiting Harry’s house tomorrow?” he asked gently.
Nina’s eyes widened. “Out!” she chirped, her little voice rising in pitch. “Nina play!”
Seeing she wasn’t budging, Benjamin laid down the law.
“No going out tomorrow,” he stated firmly. “You’re staying home with your Grandma Catherine.”
The moment he finished, a small hand smacked his face.
“Daddy, no talk,” Nina declared, striking again. “Nina hit. Nian bad.”
Benjamin caught her chubby little hand. He didn’t swat it away like Amelia might have; he was worried he wouldn’t be able to control his strength.
Instead, he brought it to his lips and gave it a soft, pretend bite.
It didn’t hurt at all, but Nina acted like her hand was gravely wounded.
“No bite!” she cried, trying to pull it back with all her might. “Hand hurt!”
Benjamin held on, not letting her pull away, and soon they were wrestling playfully on the bed.
When Amelia came out of the shower, she found Nina hugging a pillow and muttering about hitting Benjamin.
“Nina!” Amelia called out sharply. “Are you hitting people again? You’re not good! Do you really think I won’t give you a spanking?”
Amelia quickly walked over and took the pillow from Nina’s arms.
While Nina had hit Benjamin, he had also bitten her. Nina presented her chubby hand as evidence for Amelia to inspect,

Amelia took a look. Her little hand was perfectly fine-no bite marks, no injuries.

With no proof that Benjamin had retaliated, Nina was utterly defeated. She flopped face down onto the bed and lay still.
Seeing her so dejected, Amelia turned to Benjamin. “What happened?”
Benjamin explained the situation. Hearing that Nina wanted to go visit Harry again, Amelia felt a knot of anxiety tighten in her chest.
“I don’t really want her to go out either,” Amelia admitted honestly. “I’m still scared to let her leave the house after what happened.”
As they talked, Nina, who’d been active all day, did something rare-she fell asleep on her own. Soon, soft, even breathing filled the room.
Amelia tucked the blanket around her little tummy and kissed her cheek.
This night, Amelia and Benjamin took turns checking Nina’s temperature. Thankfully, her fever didn’t return.
She did twitch and jerk in her sleep a few times, but Amelia held her close, which seemed to settle her.
The next day, before they could finalize whether Nina would go out, Benjamin received a call from Lester.
Lester hadn’t disturbed Benjamin’s sleep the previous night. He waited until now to call, asking Benjamin to come to the hospital.
Benjamin refused without a second thought, his tone cold.
This time, Lester didn’t give him any time to reconsider.
“Benjamin,” Lester said, his voice calm but pointed. “I took care of you for years when we were kids.
“I’m in the hospital now. Don’t you think you should come see me?
“Is this how you treat your older brother?”
The moment he heard it, Benjamin’s face turned cold. A flash of fierce anger burned in his eyes, his voice tight with barely contained rage.
“Lester, you’re asking for it,” he warned.

Benjamin’s memories stretched back very early. He remembered things from when he was two or three.
William had always loved documenting everything. He and their nannies carefully recorded the daily lives of Samuel and Benjamin, the three-year-apart brothers.
Benjamin’s own memories might fade at times, but watching those videos always brought them back into sharp focus.
For Benjamin, Samuel, who had been lost, was a forbidden subject. No one was allowed to mention him. No one could pretend to be him.
Benjamin’s voice was icy as he delivered his warning.
On the other end of the line, Lester acted as if he hadn’t noticed Benjamin’s rage. He didn’t take back his words.
“You dare threaten your own brother?” Lester continued, unhurried. “You think you’re still a kid? Every time you tried to threaten me back then, it always ended with me soothing you with milk candy.
“Let me tell you, I’m not falling for your threats anymore.”
Lester calmly emphasized that he would not be threatened.
But for Benjamin, the mention of milk candy felt like a bomb going off in his head.
He remembered the milk candy. He hadn’t wanted it for himself back then. He’d wanted it for little Amelia.
He’d thrown a tantrum to get a whole pile of it, then secretly fed it to her. Little Amelia had always loved sweets.
