Chapter 465 Why Didn’t You Come Home?

Lester looked Benjamin over and chuckled. “It’s only now that I see… you’ve grown so tall,” he remarked.

“You’re as tall as me now. Looks like those two glasses of milk a day when you were little weren’t for nothing.” Lester smiled, teasing Benjamin.

Benjamin didn’t reply. He just stared fixedly at Lester.

William, noticing Benjamin’s silence, chimed in to explain. “Benjamin, it’s really Samuel. I did a paternity test. It’s the real deal. Daniel has the report-that idiot ran off with it,” William rambled a little.

Benjamin glanced at the door, then back at William.

William understood the look. He gave a slight twitch of his lips and left the room, closing the door behind

him.

Now, it was just Lester and Benjamin in the room.

These former enemies, who had always been at each other’s throats and never shared a single civil moment, were now alone together.

This time, however, Lester didn’t speak with any sharpness or sarcasm. His tone was relaxed, friendly even, for the first time.

Benjamin stared at him for a long while before finally speaking. When he did, his voice was low and rough.

“Samuel.”

Lester replied, “Yeah. I’m here.”

Benjamin asked, “All these years… why didn’t you come home?”

Lester pointed helplessly to his own head.

He explained, “Ben, I didn’t choose not to come home. I couldn’t even remember what ‘home’ was. When Philip took me back, I couldn’t remember anything.

“It was only recently, while looking after Nina, that memories of taking care of you started coming back to

“To be honest, Nina is much easier to handle than you were.

“Does her mom have a really good temper?”

Lester explained how his memories had returned, his tone light the whole time. He didn’t want to create a heavy, somber atmosphere.

But Benjamin, grown now, was still the same stubborn, difficult kid he’d always been. He used to have that stern little face. Now, as an adult, he still wore the same expression.

Lester was trying to lighten the mood, but Benjamin wasn’t playing along. He stood there ramrod straight,

like an officer conducting an interrogation.

“Do you remember everything now?” Benjamin demanded.

Lester shook his head. “Not everything. Just the memories of taking care of you. The rest hasn’t come back yet. But it doesn’t matter,” he said. “You have to look forward, not back.”

Lester hadn’t planned on retrieving his childhood memories at all. Now, remembering Benjamin was enough for him.

Benjamin pressed on, “How have you lived all these years?”

He wanted to know how a six-year-old Samuel, with no memories and no family, had survived until now.

Lester paused briefly, then offered a faint smile. “I just… lived. Philip took me in. And now, I’ll inherit everything he has. It’s a substantial fortune.”

He then shifted the topic, his tone softening. “Ben, this Christmas, you can have as much Christmas money as you want.”

Little Benjamin had loved Christmas money more than anything. Even as a tiny kid, he had understood money. He had known to ask for the green ones, the big bills.

While other kids beamed with gratitude when they received their Christmas money, little Benjamin had just stood there with a stern face, as if the adults owed him.

The grown-ups, seeing his expression, had known he could not take a joke and had never dared tease him. Only Samuel had enjoyed teasing little Benjamin.

Samuel had asked Benjamin for some Christmas money.

Predictably, Benjamin, his little hands in his pockets and not even carrying a small backpack, had turned and walked away.

Samuel had chased after him and stuffed his own share of the Christmas money into Benjamin’s pockets.

He had stuffed it all in until nothing was left in his own hands. Only then had little Benjamin stopped his dramatic exit.

With a serious face, Benjamin had held out his hands. Samuel had known what that meant. He had crouched down, hoisted Benjamin onto his back, and carried him home.

“Ben, it’s the holidays. You can’t be in a bad mood; it’s not right,” Samuel had said as he walked.

“I know there are too many people for you. We’ll go somewhere else next Christmas, okay?

“We’ll take the little girl from the Wilson family and go on a trip for Christmas. Deal?”

Samuel had asked these questions as he carried Benjamin on his back.

Benjamin, clinging tightly to Samuel’s neck, had answered with a simple “Okay.”

That single response had meant he was finally calm
