My mother’s episode came on fast, and in the end, I had no choice but to summon a wolf healer from the royal palace to stabilize her condition.
The wolf healer said to me, “Alpha, I’ve treated Mrs. Enclaw before, but my skills are limited. You really need to bring in Dr. Sagewood. Her Showpetal Pills are the only thing that can truly save your mother’s life. The only reason I can manage her symptoms now is because she’s been taking those pills for a year and still has some of that foundation in her system. But if her episodes become more frequent, there won’t be anything I can do.”
With that, the wolf healer took his leave.
I was furious.
Before summoning him, I had personally gone to request Rowan’s help, but she wouldn’t
even see me.
I knew Laila was using this to pressure me into giving up on marrying Maris. It was a despicable move, using my mother’s life as leverage-absolutely vile.
I stormed straight to her courtyard and kicked the door open.
Laila hadn’t gone to bed yet. She was writing at her desk by lamplight. When she saw me, she frowned and ordered, “Pearl, leave us.”
Once the servant was gone, I fixed my gaze on Laila. “Have Dr. Sagewood here by tomorrow, or else…”
Laila lifted her eyes to meet mine. “Or else what”
I gritted my teeth. “Or else I’ll have you banished from the Ironclaw Pack! You hear me? Banished! No pack will ever accept you again!”
Laila stared at me steadily. “You want to banish me?”
I looked down at her coldly. “Yes!”
Under the lamplight, Laila’s skin was pale as snow, her beauty breathtaking. Then, suddenly, she smiled. “Fine. Don’t wait until tomorrow. Do it now. Banish me. But first, break the mate bond!”
There wasn’t a trace of panic on her face. If anything, she looked eager.

I couldn’t help but frown. “Drop the act, Laila The only reason you’re keeping Dr. Sagewood from treating my mom is to blackmail me into not marrying Maris. It’s pathetic.
If I’d known sooner what a cold-hearted, vicious woman you really are. I never would have made you my Luna. I regret it. I must have been blind.”
“Then break the mate bond. Holt.”
Laila rose to her feet. her stunning face full of mockery. “You think I don’t know the truth? You don’t want to break the bond with me, not because you feel any sense of responsibility toward me, but because the moment you abandon me, your fated mate, those soldiers will Bose all respect for you!
“My father and my brothers were once the generals who led them.
“The only reason they follow your command because you married me!”
I drew a deep breath, staring at her in disbelief
She knew?
She actually knew all of this?
Wasn’t she just some useless trophy wife who only cared about picking out pretty dresses, baking fancy desserts, and shopping?
“Laila, stop making things difficult.. I promise I won’t mistreat you.”
I softened my tone. “I just want you to stop causing so much trouble. Especially this time, using my mom’s illness to threaten me. Don’t ou realize how cruel that is? If you have complaints, if you’re angry, take it out on me. Leave my mom out of this.”
“Coward!” Laila’s expression turned icy. “You want to have it all-your love and your ambition. But you can’t. My Silvermoon Packay have no one left, but that doesn’t mean I need to depend on your Ironclaw Pack to survive. You’ve underestimated me, Holt, and overestimated yourself.”
She stood there, ramrod straight, pride unbroen. No tears glistened in her eyes. The tiny beauty mark beneath her eye seemed even more striking against her fair skin.
It only made me angrier. “You really think I won’t banish you?”
She arched an eyebrow, saying nothing, but the challenge in her eyes was unmistakable.
I finally snapped. “Fine!”
“Just wait. At the Elder Council meeting tomorrow at noon, I’ll break the mate bond and

banish you!”
Looking at that cold, beautiful face of hers, I spat out my threat and stormed out.

Laila’s POV:
I had finally gotten Holt to say those words himself.
I sank into the chair, utterly drained. Thinking back on the ruthless look in his eyes just now,
a sliver of pain flickered through my heart. It would be a lie to say I hadn’t held out some hope for him over this past year.
After sitting for a moment, I reached out to Holt through the mind link with a reminder. “Don’t forget to verify those bills and write out the IOU. I don’t want any unfinished business between us.”
Holt didn’t respond. I didn’t care.
After tomorrow, I would be free.
Pearl, however, looked worried when she heard the news. “Ms. Conlay, is Holt really going to banish us? But a banished wolf can’t be accepted by any other pack. We’ll lose all protection…
“It’s alright, Pearl. We can return to the Silvermoon Pack,” I replied. “As long as the mate bond is dissolved, I’ll do whatever it takes.”
“But Ms. Conlay…”
“Don’t worry. I’ll handle everything.”
Pearl was quiet for a moment, then asked, “Ms. Conlay, do you really think they’ll pay you back: The Ironclaw Pack is so poor. I’m worried they won’t just refuse to pay-they might even try to take what little we have…”
“They probably won’t,” I replied. But if they did try something like that, they’d better not blame me for what came next.
