Laila had been gone for half an hour, but my mother was still cursing. The servants in the den were all hiding and whispering among themselves.
The den had been nearly emptied. I hadn’t realized just how much of our home Laila had furnished.
Hearing my mother still ranting, I quickly pulled her aside. “Mom, those things were hers to begin with. Just let her take them. I’ll buy you better things later.”
My mother was still fuming. “She took everything! There’s nothing left! We can’t even afford my medicine now!”
“Mom, the Vagen Battlefield will need me and Maris soon. We’ll come back with more achievements, and then we’ll have money.”
My mother wailed until her voice was hoarse. “How can she be so heartless? It was just a second Luna position! Was that really so hard to accept? A homeless nobody acting like she’s still some kind of princess!
“Her whole family deserved to be slaughtered! They deserved it! Every last one of them!”
Hearing my mother say that, I fell silent.
I should have told her not to speak that way. Like every soldier in the Rydar Kingdom, I respected General Conlay, Laila’s father.
But right now, I didn’t want to say a single word in her defense.
Today, she had humiliated me deeply. She had hidden the fact that she was an Alpha-level wolf spirit from me all along.
I was truly disappointed in her.
After learning about the Conlays massacre, I had actually planned to investigate it for her. Something about it had always seemed strange to me. Why would a group of assassins suddenly slaughter a bunch of women and children? What couldn’t have been settled on the battlefield?
But now, Laila and I had dissolved our mate bond. The Conlays’ affairs were no longer my concern. I wasn’t going to bother anymore.

Besides, once Maris and I returned to the battlefield and reclaimed Vagen, no one would dare to criticize me anymore.
So what if Laila had an Alpha-level wolf spirit? She didn’t know how to fight a war.
On the battlefield, one person’s strength was extremely limited. In that regard, she couldn’t compare to Maris.
Laila, you’ll definitely regret this.
That thought sustained me until the afternoon when my sister-in-law, Daphne, came to find me. “Holt, you need to figure out how to get some money. Now that Laila’s gone, no one’s covering expenses anymore. The Ironclaw Pac and our household are almost broke. And your mother still needs money for her medicine.”
“What about our shops? If we’re short on cash, just sell a few.”
“They’ve all been sold already. But that money was only enough to pay for your mating ceremony with Maris.”
“We’re really that poor?” I was stunned.
“Yes. If it weren’t for Laila, the Ironclaw Pack would have collapsed a long time ago.”
“Is that so…” I muttered. “Alright. Once Maris and I head for the Vagen Battlefield, things will
