The evening light faded slowly, casting its glow on Maris’s slightly tanned face. Those were the marks of sun and wind from the battlefield. I used to admire that about her. But somehow, in this moment, my mind drifted to Laila’s stunningly beautiful face.

“You didn’t keep any of it?”

Maris frowned, clearly annoyed. “Didn’t I send you a letter telling you to make sure you kept half of her fortune?”

“But that was her money, not mine. I didn’t earn it.” I looked at her. “Maris, do you want that money because you’re afraid of living a hard life with me?”

“That’s not what I meant.” Maris turned her face away. “I just hoped that we could focus entirely on building our careers in the military, instead of worrying about money.”

“If we’re frugal, we’ll get by,” I replied.

“So you really didn’t keep any of it? She took everything?”

Maris turned back to face me. The disappointment and anger in her eyes were practically overflowing. A chill suddenly ran through my heart, and I felt strangely empty.

“Yes, she took it all. And when she went to see the Alpha King, it wasn’t to stop our marriage. It was to ask His Majesty to order me to dissolve the mate bond with her. She had planned it from the start. She didn’t want to share me with you!” I couldn’t help shouting.

“What?”

Maris let out a cold laugh. “That’s what she said? I didn’t mind sharing, but she couldn’t stand sharing you with me? Ha! That’s hilarious. Who does she think she is? A weak little Omega who can’t even protect her own fortune and territory without you.”

My expression was blank as I spoke, “Today, His Majesty posthumously granted General Conlay the title of Duke, the first in the Rydar Kingdom. Her future mate will inherit the title and share dominion over the Silvermoon Pack’s territory.”

“What?” Maris’s jaw dropped. “Why would His Majesty issue such a decree? If her future mate can inherit the title and share the territory, doesn’t that make her … a hot commodity? A worthless Omega like her? Based on what?”

“Maris, she’s an Alpha!”

I said in despair. And deep down, I knew that even though we were both Alpha-level werewolves, I would probably never reach her level in my entire life.

“So what if her father was an Alpha? Does being an Alpha’s daughter entitle her to such honors? What kind of achievement is glory inherited from your ancestors?” Maris scoffed.

“That’s not what I mean.” I frowned and emphasized my words. “I’m saying she’s not an Omega. She’s an Alpha-level werewolf. I fought her today. She’s stronger than me.”

Maris shook her head. “I don’t believe it. That’s impossible. Stop defending her. On the battlefield, you’re the strongest Alpha I’ve ever seen. There’s no way she’s better than you. Besides, didn’t her own mother tell everyone she was an Omega who couldn’t fight?”

I didn’t want to say any more. Today’s fight had been a complete and utter defeat. It was too humiliating to talk about.

“Is it true or not?” Maris pressed.

I sighed. “Forget it. Let’s drop it.”

Maris punched my arm playfully and pouted.

knew you were messing with me. Whatever.

as long as it’s settled. She didn’t want to share you with me, and honestly, I feel the same way. I’m not like her. I’m too busy training and fighting to waste time figuring out how to please a

man.”

She tilted her head and suddenly grinned. “But if you want, I can try talking to you all soft and sweet like she does. Just to give you the ick

She clasped her hands in front of her, smiled demurely without showing her teeth, and cooed in a sickeningly sweet voice, “Darling!”

After that, she pretended to shudder. “Ugh! That was so cringey! So fake! How could she be that fake?”

I shuddered too, but it was because of Maris’s deliberate act. The truth was, Laila had never done anything like that. Her voice was soft, yes, but she was never submissive or over the top. Her gentleness had a quiet strength to it, and she never wasted words.

But Maris was clearly pleased with herself. She shifted into her wolf form and bounded off across the grass by the lake. I didn’t follow.

I sat quietly by the water’s edge.
