The first night after leaving the Ironclaw Pack and returning to the Silvermoon Pack, I didn’t sleep well.
My dreams were filled with scenes of my mother, my sisters-in-law, and my nephews being slaughtered. I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn’t fall back asleep.
All I could do was lie there staring at the ceiling with my eyes wide open. I didn’t dare to close them, because every time I did, all I saw were my mother’s eyes, frozen open in death.
After the massacre, I had asked myself countless times. Why did I have to listen? Why couldn’t I have been rebellious just that once?
I should have defied them one more time.
I hated myself.
I had been stubborn and headstrong my whole life, always doing the opposite of what my parents wanted. So why was that the one time I chose to be obedient? I had agreed to my mother’s wishes. Get married. Have children. Learn how to manage a pack. Become a proper
Luna.
If I hadn’t married Holt, if I hadn’t settled down at the Ironclaw Pack, if I hadn’t tried to suppress my true nature to become some so-called proper Luna, then I would have been there during that massacre. I could have stood up and fought those assassins.
“It’s not your fault, Laila. You had no way of knowing what would happen….” Nita sensed my grief and tried to comfort me through our bond
“No. If I had been there, I could have protected them.”
At the very least, all 87 members of my family wouldn’t have died-young and old alike. Even my third brother’s youngest son…
Tears slid down from the corners of my eyes. “Nita, I don’t understand. I still don’t understand. Why did those werewolves from Soantia do that?”
“The royal investigators concluded that it was because your father won a great victory at the Lovanfall Battlefield. He drove back their 100,000 soldiers with only 10,000 of his own. They felt humiliated. So they regrouped and attacked Lovanfall again, but they were defeated a second time by Holt and your grandfather. In their shame and rage, they sent assassins to

slaughter the Conlays’ elderly, women, and children.”
“That explanation seems reasonable on the surface, but it doesn’t hold up under scrutiny. Assassins are incredibly difficult to train.”
“Out of 100 werewolves, maybe one can be trained into a qualified assassin. They should have been used for something far more valuable, not sacrificed entirely just to kill defenseless people who couldn’t even fight back”
“Exactly! Would they really throw away all their assassins just to vent their anger? That doesn’t make sense! The Alpha King of Solantia would never give such an order!” Nita replied in my mind.
I pressed my hand against my forehead in frustration. “But those assassins are either dead or have fled back to Solantia. There’s no way to find them now.”
I lay awake like that until dawn.
“No. I have to keep investigating. No matter what!”
I refused to accept it. I refused to let my family lie without ever knowing the truth.
I got up immediately and wrote a letter, asking someone to deliver it to my seniors at Moonlight Academy. I was asking them to help me investigate the battle between the Rydar Kingdom and the Solantia Kingdom at Lovanfall. I had dropped out suddenly to get married. My professors and upperclassmen-who had adored me-were all furious. I hadn’t dared to reach out to them since. But now, all I wanted was the truth. And I believed they would help
I actually had some suspicions, but I wasn’t certain. That was why I needed to investigate thoroughly and gather evidence.
Last year, before Christmas, Solantian werewolves launched a surprise attack on Lovanfall. My grandfather, Harlan Reed, who was stationed there to defend the territory, had no choice but to request reinforcements from the royal court.
At the time, Holt and Maris were sent as part of the relief force. They left on my wedding night.
And it was during that battle that they both distinguished themselves. Maris, especially, earned the most credit. She was the one who led the negotiations and signed the peace treaty, securing peace between the Rydar Kingdom and Solantia Kingdom.
But something about it had always struck me as strange. She was just a low-ranking officer back then. Why would she be the one leading the negotiations?
There was an official explanation, of course, but it never sat right with me.
