“It’s really all the same. Just a bit more traveling that’s all.” Tobias shook his head. “Laila, don’t worry about these things. We’ll handle everything ourselves. Besides, this is what we should do. All those years your father was out leading armies and winning glory, it brought us a lot of advantages. Now that he’s gone, it’s only right that we look after you. I didn’t say anything more. I just felt a warmth spreading through my heart.

One evening, she came rushing back, bursting with excitement.

“Oh?” I replied casually, not looking up from the military strategy book in my hands.

“I heard that Maris invited over a hundred soldiers to the ceremony without telling anyone, but Holt hadn’t reserved seats for them! So those soldiers ended up taking the nobles’ seats. When the nobles arrived and found nowhere to sit, they all stormed off in a rage!”

Pearl was practically acting out the scene. “And Maris didn’t even care about how Holt felt! She was hugging and kissing those soldiers the whole time. People are whispering that Maris has probably been sleeping around behind Holts back!”

I frowned but said nothing.

Pearl lowered her voice conspiratorially. “I also heard that Holt and Maris had a huge fight over it! If you ask me, they’ll probably break up n a few days.”

“They won’t,” I replied.

Even if Holt was disgusted, he wouldn’t dissolve the mate bond with Maris so easily. This was a marriage he had earned through military achievements. If he ended it, wouldn’t that be a mark against his own record?

No matter how bitter it tasted, he would grin and bear it.

Good for them. Weren’t they supposed to be true love? I wanted to see just how long that true love would last!
