In truth, I didn’t care about Holt and Maris’s mating ceremony. They were no longer part of my life.
But the werewolves of the Silvermoon Pack were all thrilled. I knew they were happy on my
behalf.
“Ms. Conlay, a letter from Mr. Green has arrived
Late that night, just as I was about to go to sleep. Pearl rushed in holding a letter. It was from Shane Green, my senior at Moonlight Academy. He was two years ahead of me, a powerful Alpha werewolf who didn’t serve any pack.
I immediately sat up and took the letter. As I read it, my heart trembled violently.
Maris had slaughtered prisoners and massacred a village.
My suspicions were right. There really was something wrong with that battle where Maris earned her glory.
For years, the Rydar Kingdom and Solantia Kingdom had been at war. But even during the fiercest fighting, both sides had always upheld a basic code. No killing civilians. No killing prisoners.
But Maris had massacred an entire village on Solantian soil.
She had slaughtered civilians.
She was insane.
And my grandfather had been the commander of that war. My father had also driven back the Solantian forces multiple times on the battlefield. At the time, I had still been the Luna of General Enclaw’s pack … So that was why those assassins had gone mad and killed my entire family in retaliation.
But something still didn’t add up.
After Maris massacred that village, why didn’t the Solantian werewolves immediately counterattack and slaughter our civilians in return? Why did they choose to surrender instead and sign a peace treaty with Maris, agreeing to borders and a ceasefire?
Maris had led the negotiations for that treaty. That was why she received the most credit, with Holt coming in second.

But why had Maris been the one in charge? Where was my grandfather during all this?
I couldn’t figure it out. But one thing I now knew for certain. The reason my entire family had been massacred was because of Maris’s war crimes. Damn her!
And yet, after committing such atrocities, why hadn’t the Alpha King punished her? Why had he celebrated her instead?
The Alpha King had always insisted that in war between nations, civilians must never be harmed.
Could it be that the Alpha King didn’t know about any of this?
And what about my grandfather? What had he been doing? There was no way he would have sanctioned something like this.
Driven by these questions. I slipped into the Royal Court’s military archives under the cover of night.
All military records were kept here. The battle reports from Lovanfall were easy to find, right at the top of the files.
I hid in a corner and read through them one by one.
By the time I finished, my entire body was cold Tears streamed down my face uncontrollably.
Holt and Maris had arrived as reinforcements. After reaching Lovanfall, they joined the fighting. But they lacked battlefield experience. In the first engagement, my third uncle, Clive Reed, had lost an arm saving Holt. Damn it, Hot had never told me about this.
My seventh uncle, Damon Reed, had fallen in battle before the reinforcements even arrived. In my memories, he was still a spirited young man. And now he was dead.
My grandfather had also taken an arrow wound before the reinforcements arrived. That meant Holt had essentially commanded the final stages of the battle.
And it was true that Holt and Maris had turned he tide. They led their forces into Solantia’s city of Deervale. Holt was responsible for burning down Solantia’s supply depots and granaries, while Maris led a team to capture several minor Solantian commanders and some soldiers.
It was these captured officers who forced Solana to surrender. The peace treaty was signed at Deervale. Afterward, Maris led her troops back to Lovanfall before releasing the prisoners.
The reports made no mention of the village massacre or the execution of prisoners. Either my grandfather had covered it up, or he had no idea it happened.

But regardless of whether he knew, once the truth came out, he would be held accountable as the commanding general.
I put all the reports back and shifted into my wolf form, slipping quietly out of the Royal Court.
