“He’s fighting a war and still paying attention to who you’re mated to? He’s definitely watching

you.

“And the way he’s been looking after Silvermoon Pack? Please. That’s basically a public confession.”

Nita rolled around excitedly in my mind, then sniffed in disdain. “Still, that beard is a disaster. Totally not my aesthetic. And he talks like a block of stone. So even if he’s hopelessly devoted, I veto it. Laila, you’re not allowed to fill for him.”

“Enough.” I said wearily. “Your imagination is getting out of hand.”

As far as I could remember, I’d barely interacted with Prince Vance at all. At most, I’d caught distant glimpses of him during royal ceremonies. A high-ranking royal wolf and a battle- hardened commander. Why would he feel anything for me?

Besides, he only knew I’d been mated to Holt. He didn’t know that my mother and the rest of my family had already been…

His attention had limits.

And if Holt came up, then my mother inevitably followed. I wasn’t ready to open that door.

So I sidestepped Samuel’s question and turned it back on him. “Your Highness, don’t you find it strange? Why would Solantia Kingdom form a military alliance with Ovila Kingdom when they’d just signed a peace treaty with us?”

To be honest, what unsettled me most was how quickly he’d believed me. He hadn’t pressed for proof, hadn’t interrogated a single detail. It felt almost too decisive, too fast.

But this was a man who had wrested more than 20 cities back from the brutal Ovilans. He wasn’t reckless by nature.

So why had he trusted me so easily? Didn’t he worry the intelligence was false, especially when even the Alpha King hadn’t believed it?

Samuel reached up and dragged his fingers through his thick, tangled beard, trying to smooth it down. His fingers slipped in, but the knots refused to come loose. His brows were drawn tight, his eyes flashing with the sharp focus of a predator locking onto prey.

“There was something wrong with Lovanfall Battlefield,” he said. “I noticed it early on and sent people to investigate. They still haven’t reported back. Do you know what didn’t add up?”

I froze, startled by his acuity. “Why did you think there was a problem?”

He glanced at me before continuing. “Your Uncle Damon died there. Uncle Kaelen lost an arm. Holt commanded the reinforcements, but he has no experience leading large-scale battles. His task was simple. Take troops into Deervale City and burn their grain stores. And yet Solantia Kingdom surrendered because of that? I don’t buy it.”

His reasoning impressed me deeply. Only a veteran of the battlefield would know how absurd that sounded. Burning grain alone wouldn’t force a kingdom like Solantia into surrender.

They weren’t short on supplies. They could’ve replenished them. There’d been no reason to fold.

“So what was the problem?” Samuel asked.

I didn’t hide it anymore. He’d sent investigators anyway. He would learn the truth sooner or later. “Maris slaughtered surrendered soldiers and massacred villages.”

Samuel’s expression changed instantly. He stood and paced the tent, circling several times.

“If that’s true, then everything makes sense,” he said. Then he stopped abruptly. “But Maris was only a junior officer at the time. She wouldn’t have had the authority to issue an order like that.”

He looked straight at me. “Was it Holt? Did he gave the order?”

“I don’t know,” I said, shaking my head. And that much was true.

Logically, Holt didn’t seem like the kind of man who would massacre civilians. But under normal circumstances, Maris couldn’t have commanded troops on her own either. Unless she and Holt had already been entangled, and unless Holt trusted her enough to let her act independently.

The explanations were messy and complicated. I pulled the conversation back to what mattered most. “Regardless, the reality is this. 300,000 Solantian werewolf warriors are already on the move. They’ll reach Vagen in about 25 days.”

“Mm.” Samuel acknowledged it quietly.

He fell silent for a moment, then asked something completely unexpected.

“What happened between you and Holt?”

I stiffened.

He continued calmly, “He should know exactly what went down at Lovanfall. You’re his mate.
