The mate bond between Holt and me had already broken. The mark that once symbolized our connection had faded along with it.
The words rose to my throat, then fell back again. I didn’t like discussing private matters, especially not with an unfamiliar male, and none of it seemed relevant to the situation at hand.
When I stayed silent, Samuel watched me for a long moment before speaking again. “Alright. I’m sorry. I won’t ask.”
After a pause, he continued, his tone shifting back to the battlefield. “But think about it. Even if Maris slaughtered prisoners and wiped out villages, Solantia Kingdom still wouldn’t have needed to surrender. Unless she was holding someone important from their Royal Court. Someone whose capture forced their hand. After the treaty was signed, Maris released that person. Solantian immediately allied with Ovilan. Why?”
Following his line of thought, a chill ran through me. “Because while that person was in Maris’s hands, they were tortured beyond recovery. After being released, they died soon after.
“Exactly.” Samuel nodded, approval clear in his eyes. “That creates a blood feud. One strong enough to drive an entire kingdom into the most extreme alliance imaginable, all for revenge.”
Everything snapped into place.
No wonder those death squads had slaughtered my mother and my people without hesitation. It hadn’t been random brutality. It had been a calculated act of vengeance, almost ritualistic in nature, offered up for a Royal Cour member who had died in humiliation.
It was all because of Maris.
Rage surged through me so violently that, if not for the urgency of the war at Vagen, I might have turned back toward Ironclaw Pack on the spot just to tear out her throat.
“What’s wrong?”
Samuel’s voice cut through the storm. His smoke-gray eyes were fixed on me, sharp and steady, and strangely enough, that gaze grounded me. I closed my eyes, forced the fury and pain down, and answered, “Nothing.”
“Marshal, the meal is ready!”

Chapter 34 He’ll Regret It
A young, clear voice called from outside the tent.
Samuel gave me one last searching look, then lifted his hand. “Go eat something first.”
Thank you, Your Highness.”

Once I stepped outside, I heard him calling the commanders together. They were already preparing for the coming hard fight. I didn’t rush to join them.
A simple portion of jerky and a kettle of hot water were handed to me. It was late, and the camp kitchens worked in bulk. No one was going to light a separate fire just for me.
The small tent assigned to me had been thrown together in haste. The bedding was thick and heavy, filthy with layers of grime. When I brushed my hand over it, I knew at once what the hardened patches were. Dried blood. I didn’t know which warrior it had belonged to, or whether they were still alive.
After eating, I lifted the tent flap and looked ou Most of the campfires had gone the commander’s tent was still lit. I had no idea how long they would be at it.
dark. Only
Fatigue washed over me like a tide, mixed with strange sense of relief. At least Samuel believed my warning.
What unsettled me was how well he seemed to know Moonlight Academy, and how much attention he paid to me.
“See?” Nita crowed inside my mind. “I told you. He’s been secretly in love with you forever. No matter how calm and restrained he acts, he can’t hide that quiet concern. If that bastard Holt hadn’t gotten there first, he’d have brought you the finest kill and courted you himself by now.”
“Stop talking nonsense,” I muttered, and let sleep take me.
Sleep claimed me quickly. Just before consciousness faded completely, I thought I heard my father and brothers calling from far away. Were their spirits still wandering among the ruins and moonlight of Vagen Battlefield?
Samuel’s POV:
After Laila left, I summoned the commanders a once, gave them a concise briefing, and ordered immediate recruitment.
Everyone acknowledged without hesitation. Sleep was out of the question. I spent the night arranging what needed to be done.
Before I left, Finneas approached me. “Your Highness, should we assign an escort to send Ms. Laila back to the Royal Court? She came alone. The Luna of the Silvermoon Pack must be
