The silence between us grew again, broken only by the wind slipping through the rocks.
Sometimes, silence was more than enough.
We both knew Maris wouldn’t take her own life. She wasn’t like Eric. She didn’t have that sharp pride that would turn against herself.
“If she won’t, then we’ll kill her ourselves!”
Nita growled in my mind, finally free again. Since the battle started, she hadn’t gone into heat.
“Vagen has been taken back, Laila.”
Samuel suddenly changed the topic.
His voice stayed calm, but it carried weight.
“You helped your father fulfill his final wish. The fallen Conlays would be proud.”
He turned toward me, moonlight outlining him in silver.
“Your name, Laila Conlay, will be carved on the Royal Court’s victory monument. The people of Rydar Kingdom will speak of you by their fires and in their stories for generations.”
I was stunned.
Only then did certain pieces click together. With so many experienced Alpha commanders, Samuel had still given me the most important missions. He even placed the Royal Court’s elite armored war wolves legion under my command.
It wasn’t sympathy for some lone shewolf nor was it favoritism.
It was loud, weighty trust.
It was a calm but steady force that pulled the Conlays and me from the sidelines and threw us right into the blazing front of history.
Warmth rushed through my chest.

I stood up and placed my right hand over my left shoulder in the formal stance. It was the highest salute a werewolf warrior could give a commander.
My voice trembled, but I spoke clearly, “I’ll never forget that you chose to believe in me!”
Samuel looked at me for a second longer, something faint flickering in his eyes.
“Never forget?” he repeated, his tone lifting a little at the end. “So, are you planning to pay me back?”
I paused.
“If you give an order,” I said firmly, “I’ll follow it without a second thought.”
His lips lifted just a bit, so slight that it was almost hard to see.
“Not right now.” His voice turned calm and unreadable. “Maybe… later.”
The night breeze brushed over his bare chest, sliding across skin still damp with sweat.
He gave me one last unreadable look, then walked toward the coat he’d left behind.
Moonlight spilled over his wide back. His strong tense shape burned into my mind, clear and steady.
By the time I got back to camp, Viola and the others had already fallen asleep.
I didn’t even take off my dirty boots. I just dropped down.
That fight with Samuel made me feel like a huge wolf had grabbed me and shaken me hard.
Weariness seeped into my bones. The moment closed my eyes, I was out.
Samuel’s POV:
The night air did nothing to cool the fire in my veins.
As I headed back to the command tent, each step felt like walking on hot sand.
The spar with Laila had ended, but something more dangerous had just woken up inside me.
