Naomi quickly shook her head. “No, it’s not that.” She lowered her gaze briefly before continuing, her voice softer. “But I have to head to my other job soon.”

“I’ll drive you,” Lydia cut in, almost too quickly leaving little room for refusal.

Naomi looked up, startled. “That’s not necessary. I usually take public transportation-”

“I said I’ll drive you,” Lydia repeated, this time more gently, but no less firm. There was warmth in her tone

and something else. Something difficult to argue against.

Naomi fell silent. She bit her lower lip, clearly torn. The offer felt too kind-too easy-for something she had always handled alone.

“I don’t want to trouble you,” she said at last, her voice barely above a whisper. “And… what would we even talk about?”

A faint smile curved on Lydia’s lips. “You’re not troubling me. There are plenty of things we could talk about. I don’t have any friends here… so I’m considering you one. Do you mind?”

Silence lingered between them.

Then Naomi let out a long breath, her resistance fading in a way that was almost imperceptible. “Alright… but just for a little while.”

Lydia’s smile widened, quiet satisfaction flickering in her eyes. “Of course. Just a little while.”

Naomi returned to her work, her movements noticeably quicker now. She finished the last section with practiced efficiency, putting her tools away and making sure everything looked untouched-perfectly in place. Every now and then, almost without realizing it, her gaze flickered toward Lydia.

Only when Lydia disappeared down another corridor did Naomi finally feel a little more at ease.

Meanwhile, Lydia wandered through the museum.

Her steps were unhurried, her eyes tracing every detail-paintings, statues, ancient carvings steeped in history. She wasn’t truly interested in the exhibits, not really. But she kept walking, kept looking… simply to pass the time.

There was a faint reluctance in it-waiting had never been her habit.

And yet, strangely… this time, she didn’t mind.

Or perhaps… she wanted to wait.

About half an hour later, Naomi approached her again-this time no longer dressed in the stiff uniform from before. She looked more at ease now, though the fatigue still lingered in her eyes.

“I’m done,” she said.

Lydia turned to her and offered a small smile. “That was faster than I expected.”

Naomi shook her head lightly. “I only have about an hour free after I finish here.” She glanced at the wall clock. “After that, I must head to the convenience store. It’s about a twenty-minute trip by public transport.”

“We can go to a café nearby,” Lydia suggested quickly. “No need to go far. I just want to talk with you.”

Naomi gave a faint smile.

“Do you know any good cafés around here?” Lydia asked, curiosity softening her tone.

“I do… but I’m not sure it’ll match your taste.”

Lydia waved the concern away. “I’m not that picky.” Then, without hesitation, she slipped her arm around Naomi’s as if they’d known each other for years. “So… lead the way.”

Their conversation flowed easily after that. No probing questions, no pressure. Lydia didn’t try to dig into Naomi’s past, and Naomi didn’t feel the need to hide herself either. They talked about simple things- work, the exhaustion of long days, the small, overlooked details of life that people rarely paid attention to.

And for those few moments, Naomi looked… comfortable.

Walking beside Lydia toward the café across the street from the museum didn’t feel so bad. Even though Lydia was still a stranger in many ways, something about her-from the very first meeting-had made

Naomi believe she was kind. Genuine.

But that sense of ease didn’t last.

Three men appeared from the opposite direction.

They were broad-shouldered, their steps heavy, their stares enough to shift the atmosphere in an instant.

The warmth between them vanished, replaced by something tight and uneasy.

“Naomi.”

The voice cut through the air-flat, not loud, but enough to make anyone pause.

Naomi did more than pause.

She froze.

Her body stiffened instantly, like a reflex honed far too many times before. The faint smile that had lingered on her lips disappeared without a trace, replaced by a tension she couldn’t hide in time. Her shoulders tightened, and her fingers unconsciously gripped the side of her bag.
