“You’re not even looking at the river.”
A faint smile appeared on Daven's face. “I'm looking at something more interesting.”
Althea let out a small sigh. “What?”
Daven fell silent for a moment.
For a few moments, his eyes remained on Althea as she carried Chase. The woman who had gone through so much with him. The woman who had stayed when their lives were at their lowest point. The woman who had rebuilt their family alongside him, little by little.
“I’m looking at the mother of my son.” Daven's voice was calm. There was no teasing in it, nor did it sound like a joke. Just simple honesty, and perhaps that was precisely why warmth slowly spread across Althea's cheeks.
Because she knew Daven was not trying to flirt with her. He was simply saying what he truly felt.
For a moment, silence settled between them. Even Althea seemed unable to process the answer right away. All she felt was the gradual blush rising to her cheeks.
“Daven, you’re truly hopeless.”
A faint grin appeared on Daven's face. He stepped closer to his wife, and when he finally stopped directly in front of her, he said, “That’s fine, as long as you stay by my side.”
Althea rolled her eyes in exasperation, but she could not hide the smile on her face. “I think you've been saving up a lot of sweet things to say to me since yesterday.”
The man merely shrugged. Without warning, he stepped even closer and pulled Althea into his arms. The movement was so sudden that Althea nearly lost her balance. Fortunately, Daven's arm had already wrapped around her waist, keeping her from slipping.
“Daven!” Althea exclaimed, her eyes widening in surprise.
“What?”
“You startled me.”
A faint smile appeared on the man's face. “Sorry.”
But from his expression, Althea knew Daven was not sorry at all. Chase, still in her arms, merely blinked in confusion as he watched his parents standing so close together.
Daven lowered his head and briefly kissed his wife's lips. It was very brief, only a few seconds, but when he pulled away, his gaze lingered on Althea's face.
On her eyes. On the blush that was slowly spreading across her cheeks. And for some reason, it only made him want to move closer again.
“Daven,” Althea scolded softly, though her voice sounded far from convincing.
Daven smiled faintly. Then, in a movement that seemed almost automatic, he raised a hand and covered Chase's eyes while the boy was still in Althea's arms.
Althea's eyes immediately widened. “Daven!”
“Hmm?”
“What are you doing?”
