After breakfast together, the campsite became lively with activity once again. Some people chose to relax around the tents, while others began finding their own ways to enjoy the remainder of their time outdoors.
Josh was, of course, part of the second group.
After finishing the last bite of food on his plate, the young man immediately dragged Eli out of the campsite with an enthusiasm that seemed endless. Grace, still clutching her water bottle, quickly ran after them, while Naomi, who had originally intended to take a leisurely walk, ended up being swept along with them.
“Why do I feel like you've already planned something?” Eli asked when she noticed Josh carrying a small bag over his shoulder.
Josh looked offended. “I always have a plan.”
“That’s exactly what worries me.”
Grace immediately giggled. Naomi, walking beside them, merely shook her head in amusement.
They spent most of the morning exploring the area around the river. Occasionally, Josh encouraged them to look for branches and firewood they could bring back to the campsite. More often, however, it became an excuse for him to turn everything into a game.
“Whoever finds the most firewood wins.”
“What’s the prize?” Grace asked eagerly.
Josh fell silent. “I haven’t thought of that yet.”
“That’s not a very good competition,” Eli commented flatly.
Even so, Grace still ran around enthusiastically searching for firewood. The little girl even dragged Naomi from place to place several times whenever she found something she thought was interesting.
“Naomi, look!” Grace pointed at a butterfly resting on a wildflower. A few minutes later, she called out again.
“Naomi, look at this one!”
This time, all she was showing was a small round stone. But Grace’s enthusiasm was so genuine that Naomi still crouched down to look at it.
“That’s an unusual rock.”
“See! I told you!” Grace’s face immediately lit up with pride. Without realizing it, the little girl took Naomi’s hand again and led her off to another spot.
At first, Naomi had felt awkward whenever Grace did that. But now she was starting to get used to it. Without realizing it, she occasionally found herself holding the little hand back.
By midday, they finally took a break near the river. The clear water flowed peacefully around large rocks, creating a soothing murmur. Grace sat on one of the rocks, playing with several small sticks she had found. Eli stayed nearby, making sure the little girl did not get too close to the water’s edge.
Meanwhile, Josh sat cross-legged on the grass. And as usual, he could not stay quiet for long. “Did you know?”
