Good heavens, that man knows exactly how to exploit other people’s weaknesses. I’ve already asked Vincent to continue investigating the relationship between the two of them.”

“Do you think Chris realizes what he’s doing?” Lydia asked again, lifting her head to look at her husband. “I mean, he made sure Naomi was safe through all the pressure she faced at the party. And now he carried her all the way to her room. Chris, whom we know, usually keeps his distance from commitment or troublesome situations.”

“Whether he realizes it or not, his actions speak for themselves,” Cale let out a short breath, his fingers stroking Lydia’s waist in a steady rhythm.

“Chris may think he’s only carrying out our agreement to protect Naomi. But judging by how he refused to let anyone else get close to her tonight, he’s already crossed the line of professionalism we agreed on.”

Lydia smiled faintly, recalling her observations over time. “Naomi has changed too since getting to know Chris. Whether she realizes it or not. She’s usually cautious and has difficulty trusting others, but tonight she let Chris make a lot of decisions for her.”

“And it seems Naomi feels safe trusting what he does,” Cale admitted honestly.

His gaze drifted toward the bedroom window, which looked out into the darkness of the night.

“Since I brought her back, I’ve seen how Naomi continues to live in fear of things she can’t always put into words. The life she lived in Berlin must have been difficult. Not to mention the trauma from her past and the threats from Falcon. All of that made her constantly keep her guard up.”
