My ex husband wants me back (Daven and Althea) novel Chapter 856

On the other side, the lights at the Evermont residence were still on even though most of the guests had long since gone home. The atmosphere in Silas's study was completely different from the elegance and hospitality he had displayed throughout the evening.

The crystal glass he had used to entertain the guests now lay carelessly on the desk. Silas had already taken off his suit jacket, and the tie that was usually perfectly arranged now hung loose around his neck. His shirt sleeves were rolled up to his elbows. He no longer looked as neat as he had while hosting all of his invited guests.

Meanwhile, standing before him, Don Falcon wore an equally grim expression.

Neither of them spoke for a while. The silence between them felt oppressive and tense. For the first time since their carefully crafted plan had been put into motion, they had to accept the reality that they had both been humiliated on the same night.

"You failed," the words came flatly from Silas's mouth.

Falcon immediately lifted his head. "I know."

"No." Silas turned away from the window. "You still don't understand how badly we failed tonight." His gaze sharpened as he stepped toward his desk. "You didn't just fail to get close to Naomi. You pushed Naomi even farther away."

Falcon's jaw immediately tightened. He hated that reality. Ever since he had first met Naomi, the girl had always been afraid of him. But tonight was different; that fear had turned into rejection.

For the first time, Falcon realized something that frustrated him even more. Naomi was no longer avoiding him because she was afraid, but because she simply did not want him. That small difference turned out to be far more painful to his pride.

"Chris Miller." The name left Falcon's mouth like a curse.

Silas let out a short laugh. "Chris is nothing more than a nuisance."

"No." Falcon shook his head. "He's more than that."

He recalled how Chris had stood beside Naomi and, without hesitation, cut off every opportunity he had. He also remembered how Naomi had allowed Chris to do all of it, eventually acknowledging their engagement in front of everyone.

Just remembering it made Falcon want to smash something.

"I don't care about Chris," Silas said as he slowly sat down in his chair. "The one who has concerned me from the beginning is Cale Miller."

Silence once again filled the room, because they both knew the same fact; as long as Cale remained by Naomi's side, none of their plans would proceed easily. The man was too cautious, too composed, never reckless, and far more dangerous than he appeared.

"I'm sick of seeing them constantly around her. Chris, Cale, even that woman. As if they can protect her from everything."

"Then we need to separate Naomi from her protection," Silas replied with a faint smile.

Those words made Falcon stare intently at Silas. "You have an idea?"

A faint smile appeared on Silas's face. He opened a document folder that had just been delivered to his desk. "I received a report a few hours ago. Chris Miller will be returning to Sun City in a few days."
