She couldn't believe that after just two short months, he'd ended things so abruptly and forcefully.
York was a cold and difficult person, she knew that.
But she had saved his life. She’d even been injured in the process.
Just last Friday, they’d had dinner together. While York hadn't said much, she hadn’t sensed any dissatisfaction from him.
Why the sudden change of heart?
Could he have discovered the truth about how she'd 'saved' him?
Ann gripped the lunch box in her hand.
Whatever the reason, she couldn't let such an exceptional, wealthy heir slip through her fingers.
Inside the RV, Peter watched Ann stumble away in disarray before drawing the curtains.
He stared at York, who sat across from him, for a good long while before speaking.
“To cut things off so cleanly all of a sudden… are you worried that if Claudia keeps clinging to you, people might one day mistake her for the other woman and start talking?”
York ate his meal in silence.
Peter, ever the gossip, pressed on. “Be honest, York. You like Claudia too, don’t you?”
York’s grip on his knife and fork tightened.
He and Claudia had been inseparable since childhood.
He’d always known how she felt about him.
But he had never really considered the question himself.
York shot Peter a warning look. “Her exams are coming up. Don’t talk nonsense in front of her and distract her.”
Peter grinned mischievously. “You didn’t deny it, so that means it’s true!”
After so many years as best friends, he knew York all too well.
When Ann had gotten hurt saving him, she pursued him for a year before he finally relented, agreeing to give things a try for one year.
Now, only two months in, York had suddenly and completely cut ties with Ann.
