"They said some VIPs are visiting the sanctuary today, and they wanted to use Saba as a promotional showcase for their newly introduced lions," his wife complained through the phone. "We already signed the agreement to hand him over. I couldn't stop them."
Sagan let out a heavy sigh and stepped on the gas.
An hour later, they pulled up to the house. When Loyce stepped out, she saw a large, fenced-in grassy enclosure. Inside sat a sturdy wooden shelter with a small open window, lined with soft cushions and two miniature stuffed lions.
It was clear that the lion had been loved and well-cared for on this farm.
Loyce followed Sagan inside and briefly introduced herself to his wife, handing over her gift. "I brought some treats from Harmony Country. These are for Ayla."
"Ayla is in her room. She's completely devastated about losing Saba," the woman said, gratefully accepting the gift before handing the bedroom key to Sagan. "Please, have a seat. I'll make you some tea."
Sagan grabbed the key and headed upstairs. "I'll go get her. Hopefully, a gift and a new friend will cheer her up."
"Ayla?" Sagan unlocked and pushed open the bedroom door.
The child's room was small—you could see everything at a glance. But Ayla wasn't there. Thinking she might be hiding in the closet or under the bed, Sagan searched frantically, but there was no sign of her. Panic seized his chest.
Hearing him race down the stairs, yelling Ayla's name, Loyce walked out of the living room. Sagan burst into the kitchen. "Where is Ayla? She's not in her room!"
His wife froze. "That's impossible! I carried her upstairs and locked the door myself. Didn't you just use the key to get in?"
"Yes, but she's not there!" Sagan dashed outside, screaming his daughter's name.
Sensing something terribly wrong, Loyce followed him out. Looking up, she spotted the wide-open window on the second floor. Beneath it was a slanted roof, which sloped down toward a pile of haybales stacked against the exterior wall.
