Sagan didn't have the mental capacity to argue. He slammed his foot on the accelerator, tearing down the road toward the Klein Sanctuary.
Nearby, Storm hastily packed his gear and mobilized.
At the same time, the Costa family operatives hiding in the vicinity noticed Loyce's sudden departure and immediately sprang into action.
Several vehicles sped toward the reserve, keeping a discreet distance from one another.
The Klein Sanctuary, known for its strict conservation principles, was one of the few reserves entirely closed to the public. It was maintained exclusively by wildlife organization staff, preserving the raw, untouched beauty of nature.
When Sagan's car reached the entrance, they were predictably stopped. A staff member approached the window. "You can't enter without a pass."
Sagan pleaded desperately, "About an hour ago, a transport truck carrying a lion arrived here. My daughter Ayla is inside that truck! She's the lion's owner. She snuck in behind her mother's back, and we just need to bring her home!"
"A kid?" The guard hesitated, acutely aware that several VIPs were currently holding a highly secretive event inside. This spelled trouble. "Hold on, let me check."
He walked into the guardhouse and grabbed his radio. "Mendez, there's a guy and a young woman at the gate. He claims to be the owner of the lion that was just delivered. Says his daughter hid in the truck and he's here to get her."
On the other end, Mendez glanced at the empty transport truck. "What? The lion was already released into the hunting grounds, and the truck is right behind me being inspected. I didn't see any kid. Did you say he brought a young woman with him?"
The guard glanced back at the car. "Yeah."
Mendez instantly went on high alert. "Watch out, she might be a journalist. Tell him we haven't seen his daughter and get rid of them. Do not let them inside. No one is allowed into the reserve today!"
The guard shut off the radio and returned to the car. "I checked with the transport driver. He didn't see any little girl when they unloaded the lion. Maybe she wandered off somewhere else to play. You should check around your neighborhood."
Sagan tried to argue, insisting his daughter had to be in the truck, but the guard cut him off and firmly ordered them to leave.
Sagan's face darkened with despair. As he turned the car around, Loyce asked, "Is there another way in?"
"Yes," Sagan gritted out. "The reserve is massive. They use chain-link fences, but there are always gaps. Poachers get in and out all the time. It won't be hard to find a way."
Sure enough, a short drive later, Sagan pulled over near a dense birch forest. The fencing here was loose. After a quick inspection, he managed to pry open a gap at the bottom, just wide enough for a person to squeeze through.
Sagan grabbed his hunting rifle and crawled in, then looked back at Loyce. "You should probably head back. I'll find my daughter myself. The terrain is brutal, and we could be attacked by predators at any moment."
