It was three days later before Loyce finally saw Giselle again.
Loyce hadn't been back to the house in three days. Today, she only stopped by to shower, check on Lucian's condition, and coordinate with his physical therapist.
She hadn't seen Giselle around and assumed her brother had taken her out. Just as she was about to leave for the lab, she heard the second-floor balcony doors open. Pausing, she looked up.
Giselle stood there barefoot in a plain white dress. Every inch of her visible skin was covered in deep bruises and hickeys—undeniable proof of just how insane Hank's so-called 'punishment' had been.
The girl looked down at Loyce, her eyes completely dead.
Loyce’s gaze hardened. She had a terrible feeling about this. She quickly walked upstairs to the bedroom. Hank had left early that morning on business.
"I'll make sure someone gets you out of here this afternoon," Loyce said softly.
Giselle shook her head. "It's useless." Her voice was raspy and faint. "He's never going to let me go."
Loyce's eyes drifted down to her stomach. Giselle placed a hand over it. They both knew she couldn't hide it much longer.
"Hank has another woman here in Mexistar," Giselle murmured. "I think it's tied up in his gang politics. Loyce, do you think that could be my way out?"
Loyce thought for a moment before nodding. "He clearly hasn't figured out where his priorities lie yet. He's not fit to be with you right now. I'll help you."
"Please," Giselle begged. Seeing the guards patrolling the hallway, she took two steps back into the room. "I'll behave and stay right here. I'll take my classes online. Hank already promised he'd send my classmate back home safely."
"He won't lie about that," Loyce assured her. "Your friend will be safe."
That lifted at least one weight off Giselle's shoulders.
Loyce headed over to the biotech facility. For the past two days, she had been showing up alone, checking in at the front desk. The research team couldn't find a valid excuse to keep refusing her entry.
They had pawned her off on a junior researcher who gave her a half-hearted tour, then dumped a massive mountain of past data on her, telling her to go read up in the library.
They claimed that once she familiarized herself with the historical data, she could assist in the lab.
