A faint smile finally touched the corner of Damian's mouth as he relaxed into the passenger seat.
The car headed back toward the villa.
"Got anything important the next couple of days?" Isabelle asked, glancing at Damian, who had his eyes closed. She knew he wasn't sleeping.
"No."
"Then wait for me in the car," she said.
His eyes snapped open, unsure what she was planning.
She got out, went upstairs, and returned with a suitcase. She tossed it into the back seat and got behind the wheel again.
"Where are we going?" he asked.
"Taking you on a business trip," Isabelle replied, fastening her seatbelt. She snatched the phone from his hand and turned it off.
Damian froze for a second. A business trip? A forced one? Is this to give Aurora the cold shoulder?
Damian looked at her. Her cheeks looked soft and pinchable. He really wanted to touch them, then kiss her.
He didn't ask more, settling into the passenger seat and letting her lead.
The car stopped in front of the Mountain Roots Estate—a place for the wealthy to unwind.
Isabelle froze.
Damian, in the passenger seat, frowned and turned to look at her seriously. "You brought me here... to attend your deceased ex-boyfriend's funeral?"
She was just as stunned. She hadn't expected today to be Gary and Nicole's wedding day—a garden wedding, no less.
Gary had once asked her if she preferred a church or a hotel wedding. Isabelle had chosen an outdoor garden ceremony without hesitation, saying it was romantic and free.
Seeing the prominent wedding signage on the billboard by the entrance, she was at a loss. She'd just wanted to take Damian out to clear his head. She never expected to run into this.
"If I said it wasn't on purpose, would you believe me?" she asked.
"Yes," he answered without hesitation. Then he asked, "So, what now? Want to crash it, or stage a runaway bride scene?"
She almost laughed. What is he thinking?
"Or rekindle the old flame?" His tone was flat.
Isabelle looked into his eyes. He looked like a tamed, dejected wolf—a big, strong man with that look.
"Let's go somewhere else," she said, reaching to start the car. She didn't want to go in. It would just be upsetting, and her life was pretty good lately.
"No need," Damian said, having already unbuckled his seatbelt.
Isabelle teased, "Aren't you afraid I'll rekindle something?"
"Afraid? I'll smash the place up in a bit."
Isabelle didn't know what to say in reply.
Damian asked, "What? Having second thoughts?"
Now it was her turn to feel down. He's being so childish.
