The sheer fabric of her skirt brushed against his trousers.
They suddenly felt tighter.
Even her casual little moves were enough to get him worked up.
The feeling was hard to resist.
"What's wrong? Had too much again?" he asked.
She gave a faint smile and shook her head. "Damian."
"Yes?" He looked intently at the blushing woman, wrapped an arm around her waist, and pulled her closer.
Isabelle had no choice but to slide right next to him.
A wave of scorching heat instantly washed over her.
Isabelle felt a bit uneasy. Whenever he got close, her whole body grew warm.
She was worried someone might see, but thankfully, most of the guests had already left.
His large hand wandered freely at her waist, his thumb stroking her side, which was so soft.
Damian didn't understand. How could a woman be so soft?
When she was lost in passion, lying in bed, her body was completely relaxed and yielding.
"You..." The words were on the tip of her tongue, but Isabelle couldn't say them.
She wanted to tell him not to be so quick to resort to violence, but since he was defending her, saying that might make him think she still had feelings for Gary.
"What's so hard to say? Have you been sneaking around with another man behind my back?" As soon as he said it, his grip on her waist tightened.
"No!" She bit her lip. She just couldn't get the words out.
"Better not have," Damian said.
James pulled the car to a stop not far from the dessert shop.
Damian put on his jacket and straightened the collar.
"Wait for me in the car," he said.
"Okay," Isabelle said with a smile.
He got out, but before closing the door, he gave her cheek a little pinch.
On a December night, the first light snow before Christmas began to fall.
Inside the warm car, snowflakes landed on the window and melted immediately.
Through the faintly fogged glass, Isabelle watched him stride with steady steps toward the dessert shop.
His tall, broad silhouette was outlined by the festive lights of the night.
"James, what was Damian like before?" she asked.
James wasn't much of a talker, and this was the first time Isabelle had spoken to him like this.
He said, "Mrs. Cross, before you came along, Mr. Cross only ever told me the destination. Never any idle chatter."
James glanced in the rearview mirror at Isabelle's slightly upturned lips.
He smiled, too, and added, "Mr. Cross is a good man."
Isabelle kept her eyes fixed on Damian's retreating figure and agreed, "I think he's a good man, too."
"Mrs. Cross, you are also a good person," James added.
Isabelle let out a soft chuckle.
The two shared a silly smile in the car.
After about ten minutes, Damian returned with three boxes of dessert.
Back at the villa, he handed one box to James and gave him time off for Christmas.
Isabelle took a satisfied spoonful. It has been a while.
Made absent?
No, that won't do. He has to be there.
