Chapter 400 Shared Past
Damian walked over to the display cabinet and picked up a photo from his military service years ago, studying it carefully
It was a period packed with memories.
“Why did you dig all these out?” Damian’s face was unreadable.
“I think your life is remarkable-it shouldn’t stay tucked away in a box. These are all part of your journey, and I want to hear about them.”
Isabelle slipped under his arm and nestled into his embrace, pressing herself against him. She tilted her head back slightly and asked cautiously, “Is that alright?” *
“Of course it is.” Damian smiled.
That chapter of his memories held its share of pain, but now, bringing it up again felt like he could recount it as if it were just a story.
He wasn’t sure exactly when he’d let go of the weight of it.
It was just that he hadn’t been ready to face it directly before.
After the incident happened, it was rarely mentioned-almost no one dared to ask.
Damian lowered his head and kissed the top of her hair, then pulled her onto the bed. He leaned back against the headboard, holding her close, and opened his phone to show her the earliest photos in his album.
“Most of these were taken in Fayland. Back then, Lucas, Alaric, and I were part of a peacekeeping mission near the border. We were proud at the time, full of ideals about serving, but the reality there turned out to be much harsher than we’d imagined…”
Isabelle seemed to catch an expression in Damian’s eyes she’d never noticed before.
It was a flicker of fear… sorrow….
“That conflict took too many lives.”
Including nearly taking his legs.
“And this one-what’s the story here?” Isabelle suddenly swiped to a photo of herself asleep at a school desk.
She was slumped over a desk by the window, a thick textbook spread open, shielding her face from the sunlight streaming in.
One arm was tucked under her head on the desk, the other stretched lazily forward, hand dangling off the edge.
Sunlight spilled over her, making her look like a sleeping fairy.
The photo was clearly taken from outside the window.
“Did you take this?” Isabelle asked.
Damian was caught off guard by her sudden shift.

Just a moment ago, he’d been immersed in that sumber mood-now, she’d pulled him right out of it.
He paused slightly. Was isabelle doing this on purpose?
But from her expression, nothing seemed unusual.
It was as if she’d genuinely been drawn in by the photo.
“No.” he answered plainly.
“Then how did you get a picture of me? Were you being a creep?” Isabelle looked up, staring at him.
Damian tapped her nose, his expression turning thoughtful. “Gary took this photo.”
Isabel e froze.
Gary?
Why would it be him?
Damian chuckled. “Gary took your picture and sent it to a group chat, bragging he could get you to go out with him in two weeks. Everyone placed bets-ten grand each. With over two hundred rich kids in that chat, Gary made a small fortune.”
He also ended up with Isabelle’s first love.
Isabelle awkwardly looked away.
“Weren’t you supposed to keep an eye on me for Mom? Why didn’t you warn me?”
“I did warn you. But you were too lovesick to listen.” Damian flicked her forehead lightly. “You let yourself get played just like that!”
“When? I don’t remember that.” She rubbed her forehead and swatted his hand away.
“When he was with Nicole-didn’t you see them together?” Damian looked at her like she was a hopeless case.
Isabelle thought back. There was something like that.
She’d been close with Nicole back then, and Nicole naturally spent time with Gary too. At first, Isabelle thought it was just a
coincidence…
“Was it you who left me that note to meet behind the sports field that day?” Isabelle asked.
Someone had slipped her a note telling her to meet them behind the field. She’d gone excitedly, thinking Gary wanted to take her
out…
Because Gary was there at the time.
That note turned out to be from Damian!
