After hearing Victoria's analysis, a chill ran down Cerys's spine.
"If she really was involved, then that woman is... terrifying," Cerys said.
Yes, utterly terrifying.
Victoria remained quiet for a few seconds. "I hope none of this is true."
Cerys agreed. Feeling the topic was too heavy, she quickly changed the subject to distract Victoria. "By the way, Victoria, let me tell you something funny! Guess who I ran into today?"
Sunny tapped Victoria's arm, reminding her it was time to board.
Victoria nodded, put her tablet in her bag, and stood up to follow Sunny toward the gate, replying to Cerys with a distracted, "Who?"
"That cheating scumbag Elias and his mistress, Genevieve!"
Victoria's steps faltered for a barely perceptible moment.
Cerys snorted. "I went with my aunt to the hospital for her check-up today, and I ran into them by the elevator. Genevieve even had the nerve to greet me like we were friends. Do you know what I said to her?"
"I said, 'It's true what they say, the uglier the person, the more drama they create. I can't believe a phony heiress taken in by the Vale family has the audacity to greet me and try to cozy up. I wonder who gave you the nerve.'"
Cerys couldn't help but laugh after repeating her words. "Victoria, you should have seen the look on Genevieve's face when I said that. Her smile was stiff and fake."
Victoria quickly regained her composure and continued walking. "Why was Genevieve at the hospital?"
"I heard she fainted in the bathroom at her studio a few days ago from overworking."
Victoria's lips curved into a faint smile. She remembered what Hawk had said about changing Elias's flight after the auction. He had been in such a rush to get back to the capital right after the event. It turned out Genevieve had collapsed.
Cerys pursed her lips dismissively. "I bet she was faking it. Just playing the victim to create this persona of a hardworking designer, running around to different project sites all month."
"She's been running between projects all month?"
"Yeah. I overheard my mom talking about it with her friends during their afternoon tea. They said Genevieve has been taking on projects and producing drawings non-stop this month."
Victoria fell into thought, puzzled. "She used to pride herself on the quality of her designs, so she'd only take on a project every few months. Why the sudden change of heart? Does she need money?"
"Well, she never really had much to begin with…" Cerys trailed off, then something clicked. "Victoria, are you suspecting there's something more to this?"
Victoria, now standing at the ticket checkpoint, kept her explanation brief. "I'm not sure, but since we're investigating her anyway, we might as well look into why she needs so much money. It could be a lead. Cerys, I have to board now. We'll talk when I get back."
She hung up and handed her ticket and ID to the gate agent as requested.

From Havenport to the capital, the flight took only an hour and a half.
