Elias's presence was overwhelming, his voice cold and deep.
The security guard met Elias's gaze and shivered involuntarily, freezing on the spot.
Victoria, stunned, slowly looked up at Elias, who was now shielding her. She felt something strike her heart—not with pain, but with a jolt that left her momentarily dazed.
"Lady…"
At that moment, the little girl wriggled free from her mother's arms, scurried over on her short legs to Victoria, and hugged her leg. Though she wasn't crying anymore, her big eyes were still red and swollen.
"Baby!" the mother exclaimed, her eyes wide with shock. She rushed forward to retrieve her child.
However, a cold, piercing gaze shot toward her, and her steps halted abruptly.
She felt as if she'd been dropped into ice water, her entire body frozen in place, unable to move another inch.
"Lady…" the little girl called out again when Victoria didn't respond. The word wasn't clear, but it was soft and endearing, enough to melt anyone's heart.
Victoria remembered the candy she had finally found in her bag after Elias had picked the girl up. She took it out, knelt down, and opened her palm.
"Candy!" The little girl's eyes lit up with joy, and she reached out to take it without a second thought.
The mother, terrified the candy might be drugged, turned pale. "Baby, you can't eat that!"
Hearing her mother's voice, the little girl looked back, blinked in confusion, then broke into a wide grin, showing her mother the candy in her hand. "Mama, sweet!"
With that, she lowered her head and started trying to unwrap it.
The mother was frantic, but one look at the man standing in front of Victoria sent a shiver of fear through her, rooting her to the spot.
The little girl fumbled with the wrapper for a while without success. Her lips formed a pout, and she held the candy out to Victoria, pleading pitifully, "Lady…"
Victoria looked at her and smiled warmly.
"You want me to open it for you?"
The little girl nodded vigorously.
"You're not afraid of me?"
The little girl shook her head again, blinking in confusion. "Lady is nice."
Victoria patted her head, took the candy, unwrapped it, and popped it in her mouth before saying softly, "Good girl. Now go back to your mommy, don't make her worry."
The little girl nodded obediently and trotted back to her mother's arms for a hug.
The mother's tense heart finally relaxed. She cupped her daughter's face, checking to see if she was unwell, and tried to pry the candy from her mouth.
