Victoria's eyes turned icy. She tilted her head to avoid Genevieve's touch. Following her gaze, Victoria's own hand went to her earlobe, and she understood what the question was about.
Her expression darkened slightly. She should have taken these earrings off long ago, but she hadn't worn any in so long that her piercings had become inflamed after Elias had struggled to put them in on the night of the auction.
She had tried to remove them a few times since returning, but it had been too painful.
Eventually, she had just given up.
She rarely attended social events, and her only friend in high society was Cerys. The value of 'Starfall' lay in its rare pink diamonds; the design itself was simple enough that it didn't draw much attention during daily wear.
But judging by Genevieve's reaction, she clearly knew the earrings' origin. There was no point in hiding it.
"You should ask Elias about that," she said.
"Ask Elias…"
Wasn't that just a roundabout way of admitting Elias had given them to her?
"Impossible! There's no way Elias gave them to you!" Genevieve's voice was shrill, the jealousy coiling around her like a vine, threatening to suffocate her.
Elias was supposed to give those to her. How could he possibly give them to Victoria?
They belonged to her!
Victoria must have used some trick to steal them!
Yes, that had to be it.
The more Genevieve thought about it, the more worked up she became. Finally, she lunged at Victoria, trying to rip the earrings off. "Those are mine, Victoria! Give them back to me! Give them back!"
Victoria hadn't expected Genevieve to suddenly snap. She grabbed her flailing wrists. "Listen to me, Genevieve. Elias put these earrings on me himself. I don't particularly care for them, but if you want them, you can ask him if he's willing to give them to you."
"VICTORIA SANGER!"
Victoria glared at her coldly. Seeing another elevator arrive out of the corner of her eye, she let go and moved toward it.
But Genevieve wasn't about to let her go that easily. The moment Victoria released her, she swung her hand toward Victoria's face and neck, her fingers curled, determined to leave scratches.
She was going to ruin Victoria's face! Then Victoria could never seduce Elias again!
Victoria turned her head and saw Genevieve's long, manicured nails coming right for her. On pure instinct, she threw her arm up to block the attack.
"Ow!"
Genevieve's nails were long and sharp. The force of the swipe left red marks on Victoria's pale arm. Looking closer, she could see the skin had split, tiny beads of blood welling up.
"Victoria, go to hell!" Failing to scratch her face, Genevieve prepared to strike again. But then, she caught a glimpse of a figure approaching from the corner of her eye. A vicious glint appeared in her eyes, and she suddenly grabbed Victoria's injured arm.
Victoria cried out in pain and shoved her away.
"Ah!"
