Half a month later.
As if by a silent, mutual agreement, no one mentioned Grady's death again.
Mr. Flint asked Victoria for some time off to go back to his hometown for a while. Saul, however, remained at The Sanger Group to help Victoria manage the affairs Grady had set in motion before he died. The most important of these was the collaboration between The Sanger Group and Tammie James.
Early one morning, Victoria had just sat down at her desk when Sunny Lewis placed breakfast in front of her. "There's a new breakfast spot across the street. Give it a try. I think it's pretty good."
"Thanks," Victoria said with a small smile.
Victoria had arranged Grady's funeral herself. Although she hadn't specifically invited her colleagues from the Design Institute, the tragic passing of the Sanger Group's CEO was headline news. Since both companies were in the architecture industry, the institute naturally sent representatives to attend.
When the leadership saw Victoria bowing as a family member, they were stunned. It was only then that they realized she was the Miss Sanger.
You can't keep a secret like that for long. Once one person at the Design Institute knew, it spread like wildfire.
Sunny looked Victoria over, wanting to ask if she was okay.
But the words died on her lips. She changed the subject instead. "By the way, Director Donald said a new colleague is starting today. They're probably here to take over your position."
Victoria turned on her computer, then looked at Sunny, confused.
Sunny saw her look and quickly explained in a hushed voice, "In the half-month you were gone, everyone found out who you are. Several executives from headquarters came by our team, claiming they were here to discuss projects with Ms. Donald, but they were really just trying to see if you were around and get on your good side."
No matter what had happened two years ago or how much The Sanger Group had declined, to a small-to-mid-sized firm like Aurelian Central Design Institute, The Sanger Group was still a giant they couldn't hope to reach.
Now, with Garnett Sanger in prison and Grady's accidental death, Victoria was the last of the Sangers.
The institute's leadership certainly wasn't going to pass up such a golden opportunity to build a connection.
"I won't be involved in the management of The Sanger Group, and I can't influence who they partner with," Victoria said calmly.
When Grady was alive, he had specifically built up a management team to prevent all the pressure from falling on Victoria if he were ever unable to run the company. This was to ensure she could continue to live her carefree life as Miss Sanger while the group's operations continued without interruption.
Now that Grady was gone, that management team had naturally taken over.
