That intimidating pressure was back!
Manager Waldron was screaming internally. Before he could come up with an excuse, he heard Victoria ask, “Manager Waldron, you seem very nervous.”
His heart skipped a beat. He forced a laugh. “Am… am I? You must be mistaken, Miss Sanger. Why would I be nervous? I’m not nervous. Not at all.”
“Is that so?” Victoria asked casually.
Manager Waldron felt a cold sweat prickle his back. He feigned a moment of realization, tapping his head. “Right, right. The owner you mentioned, Miss Sanger. I… I think I remember her. She’s a mid-level female executive at a real estate company. I… I even greeted her on the day she moved in.”
“A woman?” Victoria immediately thought of the men’s dress shoes she had seen on the shoe rack.
Could they belong to the owner’s boyfriend?
“That’s right,” Manager Waldron replied, his voice lacking conviction. He shot a look at the security guard and added for effect, “You saw her that day too, didn’t you?”
The security guard, who had been completely lost, caught the manager’s signal and snapped back to reality, nodding like a bobblehead. “Yes! I saw her. She looked quite tall.”
The guard was speechless.
Manager Waldron’s eyelid twitched, and he quickly added, “She was wearing high heels, so she seemed tall. But she’s very approachable. Maybe… maybe she’s the one who left you the cold medicine?”
Victoria stared at them in silence for a long moment before finally saying, “Thank you. I won’t disturb your work any longer.”
Manager Waldron smiled and watched her walk out of the property management center. Once he was certain she wouldn’t return, he turned and smacked the security guard on the head.
The guard clutched his head, looking wronged. “Manager, why’d you hit me?”
“You deserved it!” Manager Waldron snapped. “Do you have any idea how close you came to messing everything up? You’re usually so sharp. Why do you drop the ball at the most critical moment?”
The guard was confused. “But manager, you’re the one who said we have to be honest with the residents. The cameras aren’t broken at all, and Mr. Shawn is the one living across from Miss Sanger. Why are we lying to her?”
The memory of Victoria’s interrogating stare made his skin crawl. Hearing his subordinate’s question, he scowled. “You don’t listen when you should, but you remember everything you shouldn’t! Why are we lying to Miss Sanger? Don’t ask me. You should go ask Mr. Shawn—if you’re brave enough to risk your job!”
With that, Manager Waldron turned and stalked off.
The security guard stood frozen, taking a long time to process what had just happened.

Back in her apartment.
Victoria called Cerys and told her about the cold medicine. Cerys frowned, concerned. “Something about this sounds really strange. Why don’t you move into my small apartment for a while?”
Victoria took the medicine out of the plastic bag. It was only then that she noticed the dosage and frequency instructions written on the back of the box. She gently smudged the ink with her fingertip; it was still fresh.
