Mr. Flint had just returned from his hometown the day before.
He was preparing to give the Sanger house a thorough cleaning when he received Victoria's call.
The BMW Mini drove smoothly through the gates of the Sanger estate.
"Miss Victoria." Hearing the car, Mr. Flint came out of the house and walked down the steps to open the driver's side door for her.
"Mr. Flint." Victoria bent down to get out of the car, her gaze falling on him.
Though it had only been a little over two weeks since she'd last seen him, Mr. Flint looked as if he had aged ten years. She was taken aback when she noticed the new gray hairs at his temples.
Mr. Flint had watched her and Grady grow up. After the Sanger family's downfall, he and Grady had stuck together in this house. It was no exaggeration to say that their bond was even deeper than the one she shared with him.
Grady's sudden death was, for Mr. Flint, no less painful than losing a son.
A light snow had started to fall on her way over. Mr. Flint held an umbrella for Victoria as they walked into the house, one behind the other.
The warmth inside was immediate, chasing away the chill that had settled deep in her bones. She lowered her gaze, intending to change into slippers. But when she opened the shoe cabinet, a pair of black men's slippers caught her eye.
Mr. Flint, who had followed her inside, saw the slippers and quickly moved to take them out. "I'm sorry, Miss Victoria. I just got back, and I haven't had a chance to pack up Mr. Grady's things yet..."
Victoria knew he was worried the sight would upset her.
"It's alright, Mr. Flint. I'm okay. I'm doing much better now." She reached out, took the slippers from him, and gently placed them back in the cabinet. "There's no need to put my brother's things away. Let's just leave them as they are."
"Alright." Mr. Flint gave the shoe cabinet a long look before changing the subject. "By the way, Miss Victoria, you called earlier asking if Mr. Grady's things in the study had been put away. Is something wrong? Or is it about the investigation into the car accident..."
"No." Victoria met Mr. Flint's hopeful gaze and shook her head. "I just suddenly felt like looking."
The light in Mr. Flint's eyes dimmed visibly. He led her toward the upstairs study, handing her a set of keys. "I found these in Mr. Grady's bedside table last night when I was tidying his room. There are a few drawers in the study that Mr. Grady always kept locked. These should be the keys for them."
Victoria took the keys. The cool metal felt heavy in her palm.
A moment later, they stood outside the study. The door was shut tight.
"No one has been inside the study since Mr. Grady passed away."
The study was where Grady had spent most of his time at home. When Mr. Flint was sorting through his belongings, he had found himself unconsciously avoiding this room. Now that Victoria wanted to go in, he was worried about what might happen if she were in there alone.
