Genevieve approached Elias, her eyes misty with a look so pitiful it could break your heart.

Suppressing a sob, she gave a bitter smile. "I just want to care about you like a friend, Elias. Please don't push me away, okay?"

Elias looked down, his dark, inscrutable eyes reflecting Genevieve's pale face. His thoughts were a tangled mess.

"Gen, I made myself very clear that day."

"I know," Genevieve said, biting her lip. "But can't we even be friends? I won't be like I was before. I'm begging you, please don't treat me like this."

Elias's brow furrowed, but he remained silent.

After a long moment, Genevieve lowered her eyes in disappointment and let go of his hand. "I understand..."

Elias looked at her, but his mind was filled with the image of another woman, one who had clung to his shirt in his arms in the middle of the night, whimpering uneasily. He turned to Hawk and ordered coldly, "Hawk, take Gen home."

He then shot Hawk a warning glance. "I don't want to see a repeat of this."

A shiver ran down Hawk's spine. He knew Mr. Shawn was displeased. He had just ordered someone to keep an eye on things last night, yet Genevieve had shown up here first thing in the morning without him having any clue.

"Yes, Mr. Shawn."

Elias lowered his gaze and walked past Genevieve toward the elevator.

Genevieve stood frozen, her hands clenched into fists at her sides. Recalling the moment she learned Henry had failed and Victoria was completely unharmed, she felt a hatred so intense she could have ground her teeth to dust.

A murderous glint flashed in her eyes, cold and lethal.

"Victoria, your luck won't last forever!"

Elias's face was grim, his aura frigid, as he stared at the nurse. "Say that again. What did she say?"

The nurse felt a chill run down her spine. She lowered her head, her voice trembling uncontrollably. "Miss Sanger said... said that since Mr. Shawn is awake, she... she would be heading back now."
