Victoria was slightly taken aback. "Tobias?"
Tobias offered a gentle smile as he stepped inside. "I called, but you didn't answer. I figured you were probably home, so I just bought some fresh fruit and vegetables and came over."
Victoria closed the door and, coming to her senses, noticed the two large bags full of groceries he was carrying. She hurried over to help him place them on the dining table. "I must have been asleep," she explained. "Probably in such a deep sleep that I didn't hear my phone ring."
She then turned to switch on the lights in the room. "Tobias, is there something you needed?"
Tobias was putting the meat in the refrigerator. Hearing her question, he turned, gently ruffled her hair, and said, "How long were you asleep? You seem out of it. Did you forget what tomorrow is?"
Tomorrow…
Realization dawned, and Victoria looked up at him.
"Remember now?" Tobias met her gaze with an affectionate smile. "Mr. Sanger gets out of prison tomorrow. Knowing you, you'll probably be so busy with arrangements for him that you'll forget to eat. You have a sensitive stomach; you need to eat your three meals on time."
"I was going to call and remind you, but I happen to be off for the next couple of days, so I just brought some groceries over. I'll watch over you myself. That way, I can be sure you won't get sick right after getting Mr. Sanger settled."
With that, he took off his jacket, casually draped it over the back of a chair, unbuttoned his cuffs, and calmly rolled up his sleeves. He gathered the ingredients he needed and walked into the kitchen with practiced ease.
Victoria stood by the dining table, watching his back. For some reason, the words he had spoken to her that morning replayed in her mind, leaving her heart in turmoil.
She didn't consider herself slow when it came to matters of the heart.
And yet, she had only just now become aware of Tobias’s feelings for her.
She had always thought his kindness was the same as Grady's, never considering anything more. Now that the thin veil between them had been lifted, Victoria suddenly didn't know how to act around him.
"Victoria, do you have any white pepper?" Tobias's voice called from the kitchen, interrupting her thoughts.
"Yes, it's in the cabinet up here," she said, shaking off her scattered thoughts. She went in to help him get the pepper shaker.
The cabinet was a bit high, and the pepper was at the very back. Victoria couldn't quite reach it, so she stood on her tiptoes, stretching her arm further inside.
