Elias glanced at the caller ID and answered. Hawk's voice came through the line immediately.
"Mr. Shawn, Miss Vale took a fall. She's at the hospital."
Elias's brow furrowed. He looked down at Victoria, who was cowering on the sofa, his expression unreadable.
He shrugged off his jacket, tossed it onto her, and turned to leave.
The door to the private room slammed shut.
Victoria stared numbly at the suit jacket. She curled into a ball, buried her face in her arms, and let out a self-deprecating laugh as tears streamed down her face, one after another.
-
At the hospital, in a VIP room in the maternity ward.
"Don't worry, Mr. Shawn. Miss Vale was just a little shaken up. There's nothing serious. She can be discharged after some rest."
"Mm."
Elias gave a cold grunt and glanced at Hawk.
Hawk took the cue and immediately escorted the doctor out of the room.
"Elias, I'm sorry." Genevieve was propped up in bed, looking at Elias with a gentle gaze, her voice full of guilt. "Did I worry you again?"
Elias looked at her, silent for a moment, before stepping forward to adjust her pillow and help her lie down. "I made you a promise. You don't have to apologize to me."
Genevieve smiled at him, about to say something more when she noticed a smear of red. The smile on her face froze.
It was a lipstick stain on the collar of Elias's shirt.
In all the years she'd known him, she had never seen any woman get that close to him, let alone leave a lipstick stain in such an intimate place.
Who could it be?
Victoria's face flashed in her mind. Genevieve's heart skipped a beat, and her hand, hidden under the blanket, clenched into a fist.
No, it couldn't possibly be her.
They were about to get a divorce!
