Victoria felt her vision blurring and the world spinning. Her breathing grew ragged, and her consciousness began to fade.
"Hey! The boss told you to get up!" Someone shoved her hard. "Damn it, did the sun cook your brain?"
Victoria nearly lost her balance. She bit down hard on the tip of her tongue, the sharp pain momentarily clearing her head.
She forced herself to her feet, steadying her body before looking up toward the steps. Harry was sitting there in a chair.
"Are you satisfied, Mr. Brown?"
"I didn't expect you to be so tough! Three hours... I'm reasonably satisfied," Harry said, fiddling with the gold ring on his thumb as he gave Victoria a dark look.
Victoria's voice was a raw whisper. "Then please, keep your promise..."
"Promise? What promise?" Harry feigned ignorance, turning to his cronies. "Did any of you hear me promise Miss Sanger anything? I don't seem to recall."
"No, boss, we didn't hear a thing!" they chorused.
Victoria's expression turned cold. "Harry, are you going back on your word?"
"Hey! Watch what you say! You accuse me of going back on my word, Miss Sanger, but do you have any proof?"
Victoria's heart sank.
Just a few hours ago, her words had clearly intimidated him. Now, his attitude had done a complete one-eighty. Someone must have spoken to him in the interim, dispelling all his worries.
And that person was likely the one who truly wanted Garnett dead.
Who could it be?
"In that case, I won't disturb you any longer, Mr. Brown."
Since there was no longer any chance of changing Harry's mind, wasting more time here was pointless. She had to find another way.
Pushing her thoughts aside for the moment, Victoria turned to leave.
But Harry suddenly grabbed her arm. "Don't be in such a hurry to leave, Miss Sanger."
Victoria frowned and tried to pull her hand away. "Don't touch me!"
"Don't be angry now. A pretty face like yours doesn't look good when it's mad."
After hours under the sun, Victoria's cheeks were flushed. Her sweat-soaked clothes clung to her curves, and while she looked disheveled, it only made her more alluring.
