The Abandoned Wife Dumped Him First (Victoria and Elias) novel Chapter 70

"What? He's not willing to come?" Seeing Genevieve's hesitation, Mr. Vale's brow furrowed. "Did you and Elias have a fight?"

"No, of course not! I wanted to ask him in person, but Elias has been on a business trip. He only got back two days ago, and I haven't had a chance to..." Genevieve explained quickly, a shadow passing over her eyes. She had called Elias several times yesterday, and he hadn't picked up. It was the first time since she'd returned to the country that he had done that. In the past, even if he was busy, he would have Hawk call her back to explain. But there had been nothing from either of them since last night.

For some reason, a deep sense of unease settled in her heart. Combined with Victoria appearing on the semifinalist list as an organizer's pick, that unease was growing stronger, making her so anxious she wanted to go find Elias herself.

"Is that so?" Mr. Vale's sharp gaze scrutinized her, as if weighing the truth of her words. "Are you sure there are no problems between you and Elias?"

Genevieve looked up, startled. "What do you mean by that?"

Everyone in the Vale family knew how well Elias treated her. Otherwise, they wouldn't have kept her around, allowing Elias to repeatedly bend the rules for their family business. Mr. Vale would never have asked her so directly unless he'd heard something. Was it related to Elias not answering her calls yesterday? What could it be?

"I heard that Victoria was in Elias's office all day yesterday and didn't leave The Shawn Group until this morning," Mr. Vale said. "And early this morning, Hawk went in specifically to deliver a change of clothes for her."

Genevieve's face went white. She shot to her feet. "That's impossible! Who told you that?!"

Seeing her shocked reaction, Mr. Vale snapped, "Never mind who told me!"

"It's absolutely impossible..."

"Impossible? What's so impossible about it? Five years ago, you swore up and down that Elias would marry you. Because you had saved his life, I reluctantly kept you, fed you, clothed you! I waited for three years, only for that girl from the Sanger family to end up marrying him, wasting all my efforts! After you came back, you said he would divorce Victoria for you. It's been months, and not only is he not divorced, but he and Victoria are putting on a show of affection at his company!"

Mr. Vale slammed his teacup down on the table with a loud crack. "Genevieve! Don't you think you owe me an explanation?"

Genevieve's lips tightened.

Mrs. Vale returned to the living room just in time to hear her husband's furious outburst. She shot a disdainful look at Genevieve's pale face and went to rub Mr. Vale's back. "Why are you so angry? Have you forgotten about your high blood pressure?"
