When Elias arrived at Genevieve's room, Laurel was just coming out. She glanced behind him, her face etched with displeasure.
"I heard from the staff that you brought that bitch Victoria here? Where is she?"
Elias's eyes darkened slightly. "I had her sent back to The Imperial Crest Estates."
"Sent back to The Imperial Crest Estates? Didn't Hawk tell you what I wanted? You should have sent her to the police station! Never mind, you were probably too busy. I'll go myself! Gen isn't awake yet. You go in and see her."
Elias reached out and stopped her. "Mom, let's wait until Gen wakes up to talk about this."
Laurel glared at him. "Wait for what? That bitch did this to Gen. She should be sent to the police immediately to face the consequences. Elias, you can't be soft-hearted. Gen has given up so much for you. You can't let her down, especially since that baby was yours..."
"Who told you Gen's baby was mine?" Elias interrupted, frowning.
Laurel was stunned. "You... you mean Gen's baby—wasn't yours? How is that possible? She loves you so much..."
Elias's face was grim. "Shortly after Gen went abroad, the Vale family forced her into a marriage. This child was with her ex-husband."
"Ex... ex-husband?" Laurel was in disbelief. After a long pause, she asked, "Does her ex-husband know about the baby?"
Elias, who had barely slept, pinched the bridge of his nose. "No. Her ex-husband is a gambler who cheated her out of all her money and was physically abusive. She was at her wit's end when she called me, begging me to help with her lawsuit. She only found out she was pregnant after the divorce was finalized recently."
Laurel didn't know how to feel about this news. There was a mix of disappointment and relief, both stemming from the false hope she'd had.
It took her a while to process it. She couldn't help but feel sorry for Genevieve. "Such a wonderful girl like Gen, why has her life been so hard!"
She was genuinely fond of Genevieve.
If it weren't for her, her son might not be alive today.
At this thought, Laurel's expression hardened again. "Whether that child was a Shawn or not, it doesn't change the fact that Victoria is the one who harmed Gen! Elias, you can't just let her off the hook. A woman like that has no place in the Shawn family. You must divorce her immediately!"
Divorce...
The word echoed in his mind. Elias's brow furrowed, a wave of irritation and a strange sense of resistance washing over him.
Seeing Elias's hesitation, Laurel pressed, "Elias, did you hear what I said?!"
"I'll handle this myself. Please don't interfere."
Laurel opened her mouth to say more, but Elias had already turned and entered the room.
