The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 16

Every time Gavin showed up at an event where Lance was present, he would look for trouble. He never stood a chance against Lance himself, so instead, he made life difficult for the people around him.

People like Catherine.

She slipped away from the main crowd, hoping to sneak out the back. But Gavin spotted her right away. He barely paused before leaving his conversation behind and hurrying after her.

Catherine had just stepped outside the ballroom when Gavin blocked her into a corner.

“Well, well, Catherine. For a second, I thought I was seeing things.”

Lance was the type who kept quiet and let his actions speak for him. He had sharp features and an air of coolness that made people notice him. Gavin was different. He had a pretty face, talked too much, and always seemed to be looking for a fight.

“I thought you’d been iced out. What are you doing back here?”

Everyone in the business circle knew Catherine was Lance’s trusted assistant. Six months ago, she’d been shifted to a branch office as general manager. It sounded like a promotion, but everyone knew it was really a step down. People had been whispering ever since, guessing she must have messed up somehow.

“Work needs me here,” Catherine said with a polite nod. “Gavin, I’ve got things to take care of, so I’ll be going.”

Gavin leaned in, planting his elbow on the wall to block her way. “Lance is so busy tonight. I can’t even say hi to him. Why don’t you have a drink with me for old times’ sake?”

He grabbed the glass of water from her hand and swapped it for a glass of red wine. “Drink it all. Don’t leave a drop.”

Gavin’s family was a big deal around here, just behind the James family. He could throw his weight around if he wanted to. Catherine had given in to him before just to keep things civil.

Not tonight.

“Gavin, I’m not feeling well. I took some medicine earlier, so I can’t drink.”

Gavin just grinned like he didn’t believe a word of it.

“You look fine to me. What’s the real story? Did Lance tell you to stay away from me? Are you cutting me off for good?”
