Catherine’s thoughts were a tangled mess, but all at once, everything went quiet. Her heart dropped so fast she could almost hear it hit bottom.
“Seriously? Of all people, we have to run into him here too,” Lorinda muttered, barely moving her lips.
Catherine’s gaze shifted, but when she spoke, she sounded totally normal. “Lance. What a surprise. Here to see Harrell again?”
“Yeah, what a coincidence,” Lance replied, his voice carrying a hint of something she couldn’t quite place. “Is it about your friend again?”
The tension in Catherine’s body started to slowly ease.
Lorinda nodded without thinking. “Yeah, I’m with her. Lance, it’s been a while.”
Back when Catherine and Lance were married, Lorinda had only met him once. It was right after her IVF had worked. She’d dragged Catherine out to celebrate, planning to stay up all night. But then Lance had shown up in the middle of the night to pick Catherine up, waiting outside in a Rolls-Royce that looked expensive enough to buy her entire building. He’d only parked there for five minutes, but that was enough to set the whole neighborhood buzzing. Everyone was dying to know who the bigshot was.
That was the only time.
“Lorinda.” Lance’s lips barely moved as he gave a slight nod.
Even Lorinda, who was usually bold and sharp, seemed to pull back a little in front of him. She thought Lance was blind for not picking Catherine, especially since he’d chosen someone like Adelina instead. Still, there was something about him—this kind of commanding energy. He was all calm confidence and good manners, and somehow that made you want to straighten your posture.
After the quick greetings, the air turned awkward and heavy.
Just then, the office door opened and Harrell came out. For a moment, everyone just stared.
Lorinda leaned in and whispered to Catherine, “Wow. Young, handsome, and a genius gynecologist. That’s impressive.”
Harrell gave Catherine a polite nod, then walked over to Lance and handed him a business card. “This is my professor’s card. I think you should…” His voice was so quiet it was drowned out by some noise down the hall.
