The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 570

Adelina pressed, “If you don't even care about her, why meddle in the Lees’ business at all?”

“It’s work,” Lance replied coolly. “The branch wants to establish a foothold in Eldervale, and the Lee family is in our way.”

His dark eyes were remote, bordering on dismissive. “Are you finished with your questions?”

“So you weren’t helping Catherine for her sake,” Adelina remarked, her voice tinged with a knowing edge. “You just needed a way in—a role to play while you took down the Lees.”

She offered him a faint, almost indifferent smile. “That's all I have to say. Think over what I told you. I’ll be on my way.”

She headed down the cobblestone path, left the villa grounds, and nearly bumped into Catherine standing just outside the gate.

By now, Lance had already disappeared back inside.

“Catherine, you think having a baby will keep Lance by your side?” Adelina said with biting sarcasm. “Forget it. He’s only ever seen you as a pawn. If you weren’t tied to the Lees, you’d be invisible to him. Don’t delude yourself.”

Her words dripped with disdain. “Some great Lee family heiress—how grand that must sound. But everyone in Eldervale knows what Geoffrey and his wife are really like: cold-blooded snakes. That blood runs through the Lees, and now your child has tainted the James family’s line as well. He’ll never truly belong in their family—”

Catherine cut her off, her voice cold. “And what about you, Adelina? If you’re so deserving, why did you get dumped at the altar? For all your talk, you’re just an abandoned bride looking for an outlet, sniping at me to make yourself feel better. In front of Lance, you crawl, hoping for the tiniest bit of attention, and you never get it. What claim do you have to look down at me?”

Lanny was her vulnerability, but he was also her strength.

She had no intention of taking Adelina’s abuse any longer. She’d given ground before, and all it ever did was invite more attacks. Adelina thrived on advantage, always playing the victim after pushing her luck.

“You—” Adelina sputtered.

“And let’s be clear—the child is mine. Not Lance’s.”

With that, Catherine stepped past her, entering the garden and swinging the gate shut with a decisive snap.

A baby’s cry floated out from an open window, thin and plaintive.

Adelina shot a vengeful look over her shoulder, her eyes flashing with malice and frustration.

Inside, Catherine kicked off her shoes, set down her bag, and couldn’t hide the strain on her face. Susan had already arrived and was in the kitchen with Alexa, working on lunch.
