Lance forwarded the message to Catherine without saying a word. “It’s handled,” he said, handing her back the phone.
Adelina was still talking on the other end, her voice tinny through the speaker. “So, when are we going…”
Catherine just hung up.
She quickly picked out an eight o’clock flight for that night. Once the tickets were booked, she sent the itinerary to Lance.
“Send her a copy too,” Lance said, flipping through some papers.
Catherine powered down her phone. “Adelina likes it better when you send her updates.”
She knew Lance had seen how Adelina treated her. He just didn’t care.
He looked up, his brows drawn together in an annoyed frown.
“Lance, about the government project, I’ll be able to wrap it up soon. I already sent in the commission request to your email.”
Catherine wasn’t about to dwell on Adelina any longer. The last couple of days had felt endless, but at least things had finally turned out okay. Still, she’d never felt more strongly how much this baby mattered to her.
She couldn’t wait for her due date. She wanted to leave before Lance found out anything. First, she just needed that commission money to get her through.
Lance was always generous when it came to commissions. He’d seen how hard she’d worked lately. The project wasn’t totally finished, but it was close enough. He approved her request right away.
Catherine forwarded the email to finance. With any luck, she’d have the money in her account in two days.
Everything was moving faster than she’d hoped. While she was at work, she secretly messaged Lorinda.
If all goes well, I’ll leave by the end of this month. But I’m really going to need your help after.
Lorinda shot back a string of OKs.
