The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 24

The wind was loud on Catherine’s end of the call, making Lorinda worry. “How many days in a row have you been working overtime? Are you sure your body can handle it?”

Catherine sounded tired, her words heavy. “I am pretty worn out, but the holidays are almost here.”

“But don’t you still have to go back after the break to hand in your resignation?” Lorinda pressed. “The first three months are the most important. Since you’ve decided to keep the baby, you really have to be careful.”

It wasn’t until Lorinda said it that Catherine remembered—she’d only driven Lance home so she could quit her job.

But things hadn’t gone as planned.

“After I resign, the workload will lighten up during the handover,” Catherine tried to reassure her.

Lorinda started to protest, but Catherine cut in. “Come on, stop worrying about me. How’s my godson? Is he behaving himself?”

“Behaving?” Lorinda huffed. “He’s driving me crazy. Sometimes I wish I could just stuff him back inside. The kid’s got his days and nights all mixed up. It’s way more exhausting than my streaming days.”

Lorinda was an influencer with a solid income, and she was nothing like Catherine. While Catherine liked to play it safe, Lorinda was all about living on a whim. The baby was from IVF—Lorinda was firmly against marriage.

Catherine smiled. “Once I quit, I’ll help you with the baby.”

“Just hire a nanny. When your belly gets big, I’ll be the one taking care of you.”

Right then, a baby’s cry echoed through the phone. “Gotta go,” Lorinda said. “The nanny’s in the kitchen and this little monster needs watching...”

When the call ended, Catherine felt most of her worries fade away.

She stepped out of her car, but before she could even walk toward her building, a harsh set of headlights flashed in her face, forcing her back to her own car. The other car shut off and the lights went out.

Catherine lowered her hand and saw who it was right away.

“Catherine, giving me the cold shoulder? You won’t even bother showing up at Golden Horizon Enterprises, so I have to come pick you up myself?”
