The serious set of his features was even more obvious now.
Sarah tugged Adelina up from her seat. “This is your business. Go talk it out.” She nodded toward Lance, trying to encourage Adelina to say something nice.
Adelina didn’t have much of a choice. With a few gentle pushes, she found herself standing next to Lance.
He was still sitting, eyes locked on some spot in front of him, not even glancing her way.
She stared at the short, neat line of his hair, head bowed, and couldn’t figure out where to start.
Belinda, Adelina practically grew up at our place. You watched her from the time she was little. The girl’s just honest, not the scheming type. Sarah said this as she sat beside Belinda, looping her arm through hers.
“If you ask me, this whole thing with Catherine…”
“What’s Catherine got to do with any of this?” Fiona snapped as soon as she heard the name. “Who Catherine dates, who she has a baby with, who she marries—none of it’s your business. If you’re going to nitpick and stir up trouble, who else is there to blame but yourselves?”
Sarah fell silent right away.
Still, what she’d said made Belinda feel a pang of sympathy. She’d watched Adelina grow up, and the girl really was too straightforward for her own good.
Belinda glanced over at Adelina, who was standing in front of Lance, tears brimming in her eyes, looking so lost and fragile it made your heart ache.
“Lance, no matter what, you owe Adelina an apology,” Belinda said quietly.
Fiona just rolled her eyes, turned away, and shut her eyes tight, like she was scared she’d roll them clean out of her head.
Lance stood up, smoothed out his suit jacket, and said, “Come with me.”
He barely looked at Adelina as he walked out to the balcony.
Adelina bit her lip and hurried after him.
“Talk to Lance properly,” Sarah whispered after her.
The balcony was flooded with sunlight.
Lance stood with his back to the light, leaning against the edge of the wall. The glare made it impossible to see his expression.
