Neither side was willing to give in, so the whole transfer thing just got stuck in limbo.
Catherine was still on leave. As soon as she stepped out of Lance’s office, coworkers started stopping her in the hallway. “Catherine, are you here for your resignation paperwork?”
She shook her head and said no, and right away you could see their expressions shift, eyes full of curiosity and silent questions.
Michelle didn’t seem surprised at all. She was on her way to drop off some files upstairs and ended up walking down with Catherine.
“So, what does Lance plan to do with you?” she asked.
“Do with you.” Catherine couldn’t help but notice the phrasing. It fit, honestly.
She just shook her head. “It’s not decided yet.”
Lance had already agreed to transferring her, but whether she’d actually resign was still up in the air. One thing was for sure—she wouldn’t be coming back to this office. Since nothing was finalized, she kept quiet and didn’t let anything slip.
After leaving SilverLeaf Industries, she headed back to Lorinda’s place and made it just in time for dinner.
Jasper was sprawled in his stroller, his big dark eyes glued to the food on the table.
Lorinda, who was used to staying up late for her live streams, had gotten into the habit of making herself a strong coffee at night. She took a sip, and her face scrunched up like she was tasting something truly awful. “After all this bitterness, I wonder if anything sweet will ever come my way.”
Catherine was holding a tiny chicken drumstick, nibbling on it while teasing Jasper by waving it in front of him.
“It will,” she said, her voice full of certainty.
The confidence in her tone made Lorinda look up immediately. “What’s up with you? Planning to go head-to-head with Lance now?”
Lance was solid as steel, and Catherine… well, she was more like fine porcelain.
She couldn’t match Adelina’s background, and she definitely didn’t have Lance’s power. What did she have to fight with?
Catherine’s whole life had been one long streak of things just… working out. From the orphanage to a top university, the path was tough but surprisingly smooth. After graduation, she landed a job at SilverLeaf Industries, and Lance had promoted her every step of the way. For someone with absolutely zero connections, she’d accomplished way more than anyone expected. Honestly, her rewards had always outweighed her efforts.
Maybe that’s why she had this stubborn streak in her bones. It’s what gave her the nerve to push back against Lance at work.
But everything had started to go sideways after she got pregnant. She became cautious, always trying to protect herself, hoping to get out of the mess without getting hurt. But the harder she tried, the deeper she got tangled up between Lance and Adelina.
