She didn’t see anyone in the hallway, so she carefully cracked the door open.

Lorinda poked her head in, grinning and holding up two ice cream cups. “Craving something sweet?”

“What are you doing here?” Catherine opened the door all the way, taking the ice cream with a surprised smile. “Didn’t you say I shouldn’t be eating this?”

“You can’t have too much, but a little treat won’t hurt.” Lorinda stepped inside and grabbed Catherine’s suitcase. “You’re pregnant. Like I’d let you pack alone. Come on, I’m taking you home.”

She nodded at Catherine’s shoes, so Catherine slipped them on and followed her downstairs, ice cream in hand.

She ate it slowly, savoring the cold, creamy sweetness as it melted in her mouth. Her eyes closed in total bliss.

“I took a nap with Jasper, so I’m full of energy. Want to grab lunch somewhere?” Lorinda asked, stashing the suitcase in the trunk.

Catherine popped open Lorinda’s ice cream and held the spoon up to her friend’s mouth. “Maybe not. If Jasper doesn’t see you, he’s going to throw a fit.”

“The nanny’s got him in the car.” Lorinda glanced at the back seat.

Through the window, Catherine couldn’t make out much, just a faint blur of movement inside.

“Let’s finish these before we get in, or my son will get jealous.” Lorinda took her ice cream and started eating in big bites.

Catherine sped up too. “Where are we headed?”

“A new place just opened near my apartment. The vibe is nice. Let’s check it out.” Lorinda gave her a sideways glance. “Once we leave, we won’t get to have food like this again.”

The mention of leaving made Catherine’s stomach twist. Lance still hadn’t gotten back to her. Almost a week had passed.

Just as she was thinking about him, her phone rang.

Lance.

Catherine handed her ice cream to Lorinda and put a finger to her lips.

“Lance,” she said, answering the call. Her posture straightened automatically.
