The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 279

The whole thing hadn’t even been Gavin’s idea. He just went along with it and somehow managed to patch up a plan that was full of holes. Despite his efforts, Catherine still saw right through them.

Gavin never imagined Catherine would actually drain her savings for a child she wasn’t even related to. When he found out she’d really handed over the money, he felt all sorts of things he couldn’t even name. Now that everything was out in the open, his feelings were even messier.

“I… I’m sorry, I…”

“Don’t bother, Gavin. Your apology means nothing to me,” Catherine cut in, her voice cool and steady. “I’m just a nobody. To someone like you, I’m just a toy. If I could bring you a few laughs, I guess that’s my honor. Whatever you do or say next, just don’t mind me. As long as you’re happy, that’s all that matters.”

She stood in the courtyard, her long black dress making her look even more delicate. The wind picked up, tossing her hair around. She looked calm, but she seemed so fragile, like she could shatter into a million pieces at any second. Every piece seemed to stab right into Gavin’s chest.

He had never looked so serious. He could barely breathe, the pain in his chest warm and sharp, as if his heart was bleeding out. He wanted to say something else, but nothing would come.

Catherine turned and walked back inside.

Lorinda was locked in a standoff with Amanda, holding Amanda’s phone and demanding she transfer the money back right now.

“Give Lorinda her two hundred thousand. As for what came before, we’ll let it go,” Catherine said as she closed the door and locked it. “Otherwise, the three of us can just sit in here all day.”

She dragged a chair over and sat right by the door.

“Why should we let the rest go?” Lorinda snapped. “I want every cent back, not a penny less!”

“I don’t have it!” Amanda shot back, her eyes wide. “Not a single cent!”

Lorinda got even more worked up. “How can someone as selfish and shameless as you be in charge of an orphanage? You’re just a wolf in sheep’s clothing. All the money we sent you over the years… did you spend it all on yourself?”

Amanda stayed silent, no matter what Lorinda said.
