The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 283

“No.”

Lorinda had probably asked her this question a dozen times already, but Catherine always had the same answer.

Lorinda just sighed, that familiar mix of concern and resignation on her face. She’d gotten used to it by now, though she still felt bad for Catherine. It was like Catherine’s plans to leave were a never-ending struggle, as if every time she got close, something else would trip her up. Still, every mess eventually gets cleaned up, right? For all they knew, she might get news tomorrow and be gone the next day.

“Did you pay him back yet?” Catherine asked, doing her best not to think about Lance. She still didn’t understand that man, not really.

Lorinda’s expression shifted, a little embarrassed. “I tried to transfer the money, but he wouldn’t take it. He said he wanted to buy me dinner instead.”

Catherine’s brows knitted together. “So, he wants to see you?”

“Yeah.” Lorinda sounded just as uneasy, but she tried to see the bright side. “I mean, he lent me money so easily, didn’t even worry I might be scamming him. Maybe he just wants to meet up, nothing else.”

“And did you say yes?”

Lorinda shook her head. “Told him I’ve been busy lately, no time to go out. He said he’d wait until I’m free.”

No date was set, but since he wouldn’t accept the money, it seemed like seeing him was unavoidable.

“Try to get the money to him without meeting up, if you can,” Catherine said. She didn’t want Lorinda taking any chances.

Lorinda nodded. “Yeah, I know. I’m keeping an eye on Amanda, too. You know, after all these years out in the world, we never got taken down by any strangers, but Amanda screwed us over. All this time, and it’s her who gets us. What a mess.”

She was totally done with Amanda at this point. The anger wasn’t just about money, though. Sure, money mattered, but Patty mattered even more. Being told she had leukemia, getting poked with needles every day, having her hair cut off... that kind of thing leaves scars, no matter how tough you are.

Last night, neither of them slept much. When they got home, Jasper was fussing for Lorinda. So much for catching up on sleep. Lorinda ended up in the living room playing with Jasper, telling Catherine to go rest.
