Neville stood there in awkward silence for a few seconds, then blurted out, “Catherine, why do you need to see the HR manager?”
“Why? Worried I’ll fire you?” Catherine cut straight to the heart of it.
Neville immediately put on a wide grin. “No way. Someone as young, smart, and gorgeous as you wouldn’t just fire people out of the blue.”
“Get out.”
His sweet talk didn’t even make a dent in Catherine’s mood. She pointedly told him to leave, and Neville, clearly desperate for any excuse to stay, kept glancing back as he slowly shuffled out of the office.
Almost noon. The HR manager finally arrived, looking flustered and a little out of breath.
“Sorry, Catherine, I had no idea you’d be in today. The campus recruitment was on my schedule from last week.”
Nadine looked about forty, a bit on the heavy side, with all the confidence of a seasoned businesswoman. Black, chunky glasses framed her sharp, calculating eyes.
“It’s fine. Work comes first,” Catherine replied, giving Nadine a quick once-over. “So, how did the recruitment go?”
Nadine shook her head, sighing. “These college grads think too highly of themselves. They expect a six-figure salary just because they have a degree, but none of them really fit.”
“I need a secretary.” Catherine didn’t waste any time.
“We didn’t find anyone,” Nadine replied, sounding helpless, but there was a stubborn edge to her voice.
“Call headquarters. Tell them to transfer Letty from the secretarial pool to work for me.”
Nadine froze, surprised. “That’s… a long transfer. Are you sure Letty will want to come out here?”
“Just do it.” Catherine’s eyes were clear and piercing. Her face was striking, almost intimidating, and when she got serious like this, she had a kind of authority that made it impossible to argue.
