Adelina chased after Harrell, grabbing at his sleeve, but she didn’t dare make a sound. She waited until he finished his call.
Harrell slipped his phone into his pocket and turned to face her. She stood there, blocking his path, her face full of panic.
“What are you even hoping to get out of all this?” Her voice shook. “Harrell, you’ll regret doing this!”
He looked at her, completely unmoved. “I won’t regret it. Worst case, Lance and I fall out. My reputation? That lost its worth a long time ago.”
Hearing that, Adelina’s attitude softened. She lowered her head, her voice quieter. “I got carried away just now. I admit, it was my fault—”
Harrell cut her off. “Adelina, I don’t hit women, but I’m not made of paper either. You owe me two slaps for what you did. Pay up right here, right now, or you’ll see what happens next.”
She stared at him. Was he serious? He wouldn’t hit her, so was she supposed to slap herself?
Adelina’s throat tightened. Her palms were still tingling from how hard she’d slapped him earlier. Harrell’s face was still red, and the look in his eyes made her shiver.
“I…” Her voice trailed off as she trembled. If she wasn’t holding something over him, he probably would have ripped her apart by now.
Harrell saw her hesitate, so he stepped around her and headed for the elevator.
Just as he was about to go inside, the sharp sound of two slaps echoed behind him. He stopped and turned to look.
Adelina’s cheeks were burning bright red, marked by two fresh handprints. She looked away, face flushed with pain and humiliation.
Harrell stepped into the elevator and glanced at her one last time. “Adelina, you’re not even close to Catherine. I can’t wait to see how you ruin yourself.”
The elevator doors slid shut, hiding the jealousy that suddenly flashed across Adelina’s face.
How was she not as good as Catherine? Catherine was just an orphan, a secretary, someone born to be ordinary. Adelina was the only daughter of the Green family, and she’d grown up with Lance. Harrell barely even knew Catherine—how could he think she was better?
