“The kids will have their own luck in life.”
Ableson seemed totally relaxed about it. “Back then, you tried to stop him from being with Catherine. It didn’t work, did it? It’s the same now. He’s got his own ideas.”
Fiona shot him a look. “You just want him to hurry up and get married so you can brag about having great-grandkids. You don’t even care what happens anymore.”
Ableson thought for a second, wondering if it was too late to change his tune.
“Go sleep on the couch.” Fiona’s patience snapped. She tossed his pillow off the bed. “Just looking at you stresses me out.”
Ableson didn’t argue. He picked up his pillow and shuffled to the sofa without a word.
Fiona’s anger flared and faded in a flash. She quickly lost interest in Ableson and started thinking about Lance. She couldn’t imagine anything that would force him to marry Adelina if he didn’t want to. But still, she needed to figure out what was really going on.
That night, Adelina ended up staying over anyway.
The next morning, breakfast was unusually lively.
Well, to be more accurate, Belinda was in an unusually good mood. She was humming to herself, flipping through the business section, and eating with a little smile.
“Mom, what’s got you so cheerful?” Sophia looked at her like she was seeing something out of a dream.
“Grownups’ business isn’t for kids to meddle in,” Belinda said, but she couldn’t keep the smile off her face. “Eat up or you’ll be late for work.”
“Okay, okay.” Sophia went back to her food, sneaking a look at Fiona. *What’s going on?*
Fiona just shook her head. She honestly never bothered trying to read Belinda’s moods.
Breakfast was almost finished. Sophia grabbed a napkin and was about to leave when Adelina came downstairs.
She looked pale, like she hadn’t slept well.
Belinda set the newspaper aside and gave her a concerned look. “Did you stay up too late last night? You look awful. You should have slept in longer, there’s no one here but us. Don’t try to compete with Lance. He’s always had energy for days. He left early, right?”
Sophia, who had been halfway out of her seat, sat right back down.
So Belinda was in such a good mood because she thought Lance and Adelina had finally made it official last night.
“Mom, I—”
Lance left last night!
